With the lid still on, I flip it upside down and tap it firmly with my knuckles 3 or 4 times. Then, while still upside down, I gently unscrew the cap, so as not to unleash a cloud of dust. That gives me enough product for 1-2 full applications in the lid. I dip my brush lightly in, and then tap the excess off on the side of the lid. There is usually a little bit of a cloud of dust - there's really no way to avoid it entirely, as far as I know. But if you use fairly small motions as you're tapping, most of it will go back into the lid.
