MIL insists its not possible here! (CA)

Hi...

lol my mil is still admant that homebirth is not possible in ca because nobody would do it! we tried to tell her yes its possible and we will have another one for our second when I get pg again... but she wouldnt hear of it! She kept saying things might be like that in Australia but definitely not here!!!!

Has anyone hb'd in ca? Which midwife did you go with, I'd like to get in touch with one that comes recommended!

Buy your MIL a copy of The Baby Catcher--it's a fabulous book written by a midwife who works in CA.

LOL-when I first heard about homebirthing, I though "That's awesome, but I bet only people in California really do it".
There is definetely plenty of hb'ing going on in CA (and everywhere else, if you look close enough ).

Lisa,

You can have a homebirth in CA with a CNM (certified nurse midwife), LM (licensed midwife), CPM (certified professional midwife), DEM (direct entry midwife)....etc.

California is a BIG state. What part of CA will you be moving to? This info would help so that we can possibly recommend a midwife that will be local for you.

I'm planning a homebirth and I'm in the Bay Area. Homebirth is almost commonplace here, worry not! It's challenging -- insurance can be a problem and the burden on you to take responsibility for your own care is HUGE. But, that's cool!

If you're in Northern Cal, check out the Bay Area Homebirth Collective. If not, find your local independent baby store and ask them, am sure they can steer you.

:LOL - another San Diegan here, I will be having a HBAC (home birth after c-section) in about 6 weeks.

My midwife takes 4 new clients each month and she is one of many in the San Diego area.

'Nother San Diegan here! My first was at a birth center, #2 was at home, and #3 will be (due in Dec.) a home birth too. I know there are MANY m/w's in North San Diego, not sure how close that is to you. You won't have a problem finding a good one though!

I am a NY'er here, but I coudln't help but chuckle over your MIL's insistant statement. I always thought of California as the more liberal of states, even before I was interested in homebirth! And I felt similar about NY too - really the case was I had never known anyone who homebirthed around here. Turns out it's pretty underground here but there are homebirthers around, just gotta dig!

I do notice all the homebirths that are featured on ABS are in california...hmmm Hey that's proof for your MIL right there :LOL When they are near Philly, it's always hosp horror : then again the california hosp's seem pretty hairy on those shows too.

I'm in South Pasadena (Los Angeles area).
I'm getting ready to have my 3rd homebirth; 2nd in California.
Our insurance won't cover it, but it's worth the out-of-pocket expense.

I have contacted her and she wanted to meet right away and was very friendly. I told her I wasnt pregnant yet but I would contact her as soon as I was.

I had a homebirth in CA!

I did find a lot of midwives on http://www.birthpartners.com - but found my midwife elsewhere on the internet. I wish I had known about the Bay area Homebirth Collective before he was born!

I had a homebirth in Northern Ca-Auburn NE of Sacramento. I had a CNM that was totally AWESOME!!! Also, I was on mediCal and she took it. We had to pay extra because it didn't cover things like the birth assistant, but some of you might want to look into getting it. I have found that it is harder to find a mw willing to deal with insurance companies than it is to find an insurance company that will pay a mw.

I called my local LLLI chapter and they gave me a list of MW's.

I'm in Nor Cal and am having a homebirth in May. It's not to hard to find a midwife to do it, it's getting ANY insurance coverage! BLEH!!!

There is insurance coverage by many companies, just not Kaiser and HealthNet. Medical will even cover part of a HB I think.
