Grading a pattern

Hi there
I posted this question a few months ago and got a couple of answers but now, with the search functions disabled, I can't find it.

I am a new knitter and I have a pattern for a sweater that I would like to knit for ds. The pattern only goes to 18 months though and I would have to make it in a size 4. Can someone walk me through what I need to do to grade up the pattern??

anyway... to your question --
it looks like the sweater is basically a combination of rectangles. Measure your 4t kid, check your gauge, and add stitches to the cast on to make it wide enough, and knit extra rows to make it long enough. You'll also have to adjust the armholes to be a bit bigger, and sleeves longer and a bit wider. The armhole shaping would be the trickiest.

Yeah, it's from Natural Knits for Babies and Moms.

An alternative to doing the math to alter the pattern is using a thicker yarn and bigger needles. The original pattern calls for worsted weight, and size 5/6 needles, so try it with bulky on 10s or 11s. If I were going to do that, I'd do something quick, like a sleeve, and try it on your 4 yo to see if it fits.

I just posted the pattern on my personal website for a couple of days to get an answer to the question and I will remove it now. I have the book and needed some help...not intending to offend anyone.
