Need something safe to take while nursing for morning sickness

Hi all!

I have a 22 months old babe who has been breastfed since birth. He has some gut issues, including celiac disease and also something else causing malabsorbtion issues which hasn't been diagnosed yet, but hopefully we'll have answers soon.

This is important because at 22 months breastmilk is still a HUGE part of his daily nutrition. When his gut can't handle anything else, he can handle breastmilk. He still never goes more than 2 hours without nursing, round the clock, unless I'm physically unavailable (and yes, some of that is comfort, he's high needs emotionally as well, but still very important physically and emotionally obviously).

Fast forward to now. I'm 7.5 weeks pregnant. Almost as soon as I got pregnant I started having bad morning sickness. Couldn't function because I never wasn't feeling sick to my stomach. Decided that although I am usually a don't-take-medication kind of girl, I needed to function to stay well and hydrated for BOTH babies. So I went on Diclectin. Almost immediately I noticed a drop in my supply.

I find out today that B6 (one of the main components of Diclectin) can inhibit lactation. I also realized after missing a couple of doses and then starting it again that it's not pregnancy responsible for my overwhelming exhaustion, it's the Diclectin helping with that too.

So since one of the main reasons I went on the Diclectin was to be able to keep enough food and water down and get enough rest without throwing up to keep nursing I really need to find something that won't cause me to lose my milk (since I know there is a chance of that during pregnancy anyway, I don't need help losing it any faster).

Any suggestions? Also any suggestions besides nursing 10, 12, 14, 16+ times a day like I already am to boost my supply? At this point I still am meeting his needs. I know it's having an effect though because of slight chances in his nursing patterns and also I normally pump several times a day for my niece and lately my supply has not been meeting that need at all and I don't want it to drop further for my son.

Thanks!

Daily Vit. B12 shots. They work like a charm and are healthy. You can gradually taper to every other day, every third day etc. as it eases up. I did daily shots about two weeks and then cut back a bit more over another month. I learned this from an Amish midwife I worked with. My dh gives me the shot because, while I can give them to others, I hate doing it to myself!

Your supply will probably be gone by the fifth month regardless though, but if he keeps on comfort sucking he can pick up after the new babe arrives. My 19 month old did after her twin sisters were born.

Mint always helped with the queasies for me. I had mint tea on hand at all times and hard mint candies in my purse. I have read that ginger tea has an anti-nausea effect as well.

Ginger tea, ginger hard candy from Asian groceries, sour hard candies, and in worst case scenarios, there is a prescription medication you can get from the doctor, but non-drug therapies are best.

Also, check with a lactation consultant about the dose of B6 - it may be that you can have enough for the morning sickness without messing with laction, but they would know best!

I second the ginger tea or ginger candy, if you like ginger.
You could also try increasing your protein intake. Perhaps tofu or a protein shake.

Good Luck!

I know you said you did not like to take meds but I took phenergan for morning sickness and nursed my little boy when he was about 20 months and it was safe and I did not notice any side effects for him. I also second that you might want to come up with a back up plan because though my little boy continued to comfort nurse until I was 27 weeks(and we were separated when I was on hospital bedrest) my milk was completely gone by about 18 weeks.

Ginger hard candies helped me and motion sickness wrist bands.

i've heard acupuncture is amazing to help morning sickness. i agree that ginger is very helpful (ginger candy, ginger tea, ginger beer... whatever agrees best with your tummy).

sucking on candy can help - i found lemon candies to be best for me, some prefer peppermint or othr flavors.

red raspberry leaf helps with m/s and is also a galactagogue - loads of benefits in general for pregnancy, there's a giant thread in the pregnancy forum about it.

there are also a lot of homeopathics known to help with m/s. afaik, homeopathics are safe to take while nursing and pg because there is so little of the active ingredient. here's a webpage that has a list of the homeopathics and what circumstances they work best in: http://www.truestarhealth.com/Notes/2243000.html

small meals through out the day help, especially ones high in protein. do you do dairy? i found yogurt, kefir and cheese to be my friends when i had m/s. i could almost always manage a yogurt or kefir and banana smoothie.

also, there's a product that i can't remember the name of (something like 'more milk for 2' - i know someone else here will know what it's called)... and it helps to keep your milk supply up while pg.

not sure what grains, if any, you can do if your DS has celiac... normally i'd suggest oatmeal, as it's a great galactagogue, but i think that's probably out for you, right?

You should be able to take up to 200mc of the B6 for morning sickness without seeing a drop in milk supply. I'd start taking it again. Start with 50 or 100mc and see what happens. It doesn't have to be in the Diclectin; you can get it on its own.

I take reglan for my m/s. I really only get sick when I eat, so I take this 30 mins before meals and I'm good. You can take it every 4 hrs though as needed.
