Is anyone dealing with pica? I have this lightweight craving for baking soda. I started brushing my teeth with it because I ran out of toothpaste and I have these strong cravings to brush my teeth all the time now. It started a few weeks ago with the toothpaste but now I've switched to the baking soda with a few drops of tea tree oil and I just can't get enough. When I wet my toothbrush and dip it in the baking soda and it's all caked onto the brush my mouth just starts watering and I can't wait to brush. It's absolutely crazy. I heard pica is linked with anemia but I've been taking Floradix supplement and I've been much better with my iron. Is anyone else going through similar strange cravings? (baking soda, ice, dirt, bleach, etc.) I'm going to talk to my doc about it on Monday. So bizarre.

And it's supposed to be relatively common in pregnancy.
I hope your doc can help you figure out what's triggering it!

Isn't baking soda a type of sodium? Are you getting enough sodium elsewhere?

well, I've been hitting the ice pretty hard lately and I usually don't like ice that much. I can't go too overboard because we only have one ice cube tray!
never heard of pica with baking soda. thought I did tell DH the other day that dirt sounded really good, but it's not so much that I wanted to eat it, but the I wanted to chew on it -- strange, I know. I just started taking an iron supplement last week, so maybe my iron was getting a bit low. Chewing a mouthful of dirt still sounds appealing though, but won't be doing that anytime soon. I'll stick to the ice that I can get from my one little ice cube tray in a day.

I think I'm getting enough sodium. Oh well, we'll see what the doc says.

I have never had it with anything other than ice chips. But I don't know if that really counts. With on pgcy I could not get enough crushed ice, and I was stuffing myself day in and day out. But ice is good for me, so, I don't know?

Put another one down for ice. I simply cannot get enough. I literally go through a pound a day or more!
: It can't just be any ice though, it's got to be cubelet ice... you know, the kind you get from Sonics? I think Zaxbys may have the same ice too. It's the kind that looks like rabbit poop. It is just SO good. I eat cups and cups and cups of it all day long. An 8 pound bag is lucky to survive a week with me! If i'm away from home, i either have to take a bag with me (if i'm going to be away for a day or two) or I go through the Sonic drive-thru and order just a cup of ice and a spoon. It can be linked to anemia, but i've been taking my Floradix too, and the cravings haven't ceased.

And here I thought I was the only one addicted to Sonic ice!
It really is good. And the only one to fill the craving.

With a couple of my pregnancies I wanted to stop on black top and just smell it. This time it's rubber (like in the tire stores). I was in a sporting goods store today and got to walk down the new bike isle. Oh the smell or rubber.... Oh, and with my first I wanted to smell new carpet. Yes, I'm a weirdo.
You know, I've been getting off on the smells too! LOL!! I love the upholstery and carpet smells. It's outrageous.

Be very careful with the baking soda---a tablespoon is enough to cause serious toxicity in a child. The same can happen with adults--it causes hypernatremia if eaten in too large of quantities.
