Thanks!!!

We just started using tooth soap this past month. So far, I think it works just fine. To answer your q's about pros and cons, well, the pros are that it's all natural, a little goes a long way, your mouth feels clean, they are easy to travel with, a container of tooth soap will last a long time. We got ours from Rose of Sharon Acres, I believe.

As for the cons, it does seem "soapy" at first. Depending on which flavor you choose will dictate how "clean" your mouth feels. We have Lemon Ginger and Orange Cinnamon - taste wise, they are fine, but if you're used to peppermint or spearmint from conventional toothpaste, then the peppermint or spearmint tooth soap might work better. I tried the peppermint and it does seem to give that minty feel I am used to from the dentist. I think you just have to convince yourself that your mouth and gums are clean, even if they don't feel "minty", lol, assuming you try a non-minty flavor. Oh, as for the aftertaste, well there is a little bit of one so of course if you eat something right away after brushing, that might not taste so good but it would be the same with regular toothpaste, too

I say go for it!

tooth soap

My fav lately has been Tom's of Maine Gingermint (not a typical flavor). But, I've been fighting with decay along the gumline on my lower teeth and I'm really looking for an alternative to help this out (before I either have to rely on a dentist to help or the I get to something painful!!!).

My husband and I use toothsoap and love it. We use Perfect Prescription and my teeth have never felt so clean. We have peppermint and to be honest, its not all that pepperminty, which depending on your preference may be a pro or a con. The only thing that leaves me wanting about tooth soap is that I just can't really bring myself to brush my tongue with it. It is not bad in terms of soapy taste when only brushing your teeth (I have noticed my gums are less recessed now, btw) but brushing the tastebuds with soap is a little too much. I rinse with baking soda water afterward and that seems to do the trick.

The other thing I love about tooth soap is that it doesn't contain glycerin - there is a whole school of thought out there influenced by Weston Price that glycerin coats your teeth so that your teeth can't reenamlize through the minerals in your diet. You can read about that here - http://www.mothering.com/discussions.../t-643296.html

I have noticed that my mouth is healthier now that I use tooth soap. When I run out of Perfect Perscription, I may just switch to the bar version of peppermint Dr. Bronner's and run my brush over it a couple of times. Before i used the kind I use now, I was using Dr. Bronner's Baby Mild Liquid soap - so I'm pretty hardcore about it. I think the bar Dr. Bronners would be more pleasant that that, plus a heck of a lot cheaper than the Perfect Perscription.

Wow that was long.

Good Luck!

we just make our own. if you want a powder to scrub, you can mix powdered calcium + magnesium 1 to 1, and baking soda.
the toothpaste i make is virgin coconut oil, baking soda, calcium + magnesium, xylitol, stevia, sea salt, and peppermint oil...that's largest amount to smallest.

I use tooth soap - have for awhile now. I personally like it a lot. My gf, not so much. She says she misses the mintiness of regular toothpaste, but I think if she used toothsoap too, she'd not notice so much.

I find that my teeth feel cleaner and healthier too since I started. I actually use just reguarl bar soap or for travel, I splurged for some off of etsy that comes in like a chapstick tube and that works really well. I'd get one tube for each person if more than one were using it, but alas, the kids don't like it (after having the regular, sugary toothpaste at my mom's house...).

Def if you are fighting tooth decay, look for something with xylitol in it.

Ok I have to say while I have heard great things about Tooth soap, some of the advertising and information I am reading is really wrong!!

Glycerin is a natural byproduct of soap making, if you are creating a true soap and not a detergent you will have some amount of Glycerin in your soap. This is a very simple (and amusing) explanation of the process http://www.canis-art.com/soaping.htm

So basically if you are using tooth soap you will be using some natural occurinng unadded glycerin. That is just the nature of soap.

That is very interesting Tankgirl. Thank you for posting that. I had never considered that soap would contain glycerin even if glycerin wasn't added.

I've read about tooth soap for years but never tried it. I generally stick with Jason's fluoride free toothpastes and have recently tried their Oral Comfort gel toothpaste and really love it.

I also have a jar of Christopher's Herbal Tooth and Gum Powder. Have any of you tried it? It can be used in place of toothpaste. I bought it as a glycerin-free alternative to tooth soap. I used it a few times a while back and thought it seemed helpful, but then forgot about it. It's supposed to tighten up gums and I think even help heal enamel.

Speaking of gums... I just got this product and absolutely love it: http://www.amazon.com/OralBreeze-SB-...6044084&sr=8-2 It's an oral irrigator that you use in the shower. I had never tried a Water Pik before because it seemed messy and too much trouble, but the shower breeze is always right there in the shower so it's convenient, and you don't have to worry about getting water everywhere.
