For those who drink hemp milk (or eat hemp seed)....

I make my own hemp milk and throw it into smoothies. I was googling around to see if a blender existed that could blend hemp milk w/out any bitties remaining (my son has severe oral aversions) and it doesn't seem to exist (so I'll keep on straining it). Anyway I keep running into recipes that call for soaking hempseed overnight. I've never done this and am just wondering if anyone can tell me what the benefits of soaking hempseed are? I can't find an answer anywhere!

TIA!!

The one and only blender I feel that could accomplish this task would definitely be the Vitamix - they're not your ordinary blender, but they ROCK, and they do everything - absolutely everything.... They are about 2-3 horsepower, so that's why they can turn pretty much anything into a smooth and creamy blend... I've made hemp milk in the Vitamix before, and if there is some particulate matter, it's very very small... Also, I've never soaked hemp seeds before. I never really felt the need, because they're so small and kind of soft already. I don't think it really matters - it just kind of seems like it would make more work. Anyway, hope that helped!

I've got a quick question about hemp seeds as well...I just got some for the first time, and was thinking of using them like I do flax seeds, but I'm a tiny bit concerned that if you eat a lot of hemp, you might not pass a drug screen. Is that a possibility?

If it is hulled hemp seed it should not effect your drug screen. If the seeds are ground with the possibility of some of the hull remaining it is possible to cause you to fail a drug screen. The seed itself does not contain THC, but the hull does. This is the reason the US government unsuccessfully tried to get all hemp food and beauty products removed from the market. It was interfering with their drug tests and causing people problems on their jobs.

Thanks for the input!

Yes, I know about vitamix....want one, want one, want one......

But vitamix is way beyond reach right now....I strain the hemp milk through a bag and it works ok....just a pita to clean it:

It seemed kind of strange to soak it but everywhere I looked online people were soaking it in orange juice, soaking w/almonds, soaking w/this, that and the other so I was curious...I think I'll stick to my routine!

I looked up drug tests and it does look as though some people failed but it seems that they ingested the oil and in large quantities. The companies that I've bought from always pledge 0% THC but I guess you can still come up positive. Personally, the benefits I get from hempseed far outweigh the slight risk of coming up w/a positive drug test. Happy chewing !!!

Admittedly, I haven't read any of these surveys, but I can't help but wonder how many of these people who failed the drug tests either a) lied and said that they were not smoking pot or exposed to second and pot smoke but instead were consuming only hemp products; or b) were exposed to pot smoke but blamed it on consuming hemp. (As I said, I don't know how or if the studies prevented that..?)

As far as hemp milk, we buy the pre-made stuff. The Manitoba Harvest stuff is sort of grainy like you say your home-made is, but the Living Harvest is excellent.. Kudos to you for making your own. Does it work out cheaper? I find hulled hemp seed is pretty expensive, too, so that's why I wonder...?

We eat a lot of hemp products (DD & I; DP not so much), from Manitoba Harvest & Living Harvest, who I believe both claim 0% THC. I wonder if we'd pass drug tests? We don't smoke and are almost never exposed (now that we're not living in Vancouver )

I've been experimenting as well. I started out making my own hemp milk in my Soyabella, so grainy wasn't an issue. However, it was too watery or my taste and my 2 year old wouldn't touch it. The stuff I made in my blender tastes awesome, but the texture is issue for both my toddler and some things I want to use it for.

So far I buy Living Harvest for DS and drink my own experiments.

I do like thickening it with a bit of xanthan gum though. About 1/2 tsp works well for about 4 cups of milk. It makes it creamier and keeps leftovers from separating.

It actually works out about $2 cheaper a quart for me to buy the commercial hemp milk. And I prefer the way Living Harvest tastes to the "green" taste of my homemade hemp milk.

Forgive me for not getting this....but where we buy Living Harvest hempmilk it costs almost $5 a quart and we can get 5lbs of hempseed for $45....how do you figure out the costs...how much hempseed do you use per quart of water? I guess I just assumed I was saving by making my own

We use a combo of Living Harvest and homemade. I have to strain the milk thru a bag as my son can't handle particles. Hemp products have been a lifeline for us...my son would probably be tube fed if it weren't for hemp! My youngest who could use the extra calories LOVES eating the seeds just as they are
