what to do in areas with limited recycling?

We are AirForce and have no control over where we are stationed. many times it is in areas with no or limited recycling. what in the heck do I do besides try to reduce and reuse?! It drives me nuts? what are some good reduce and reuse strategies?

Buy things with less packaging (in bulk rather than individual packages). Buy things with packaging you can reuse (for example, glass jars).

My town has limited recycling, but the next town over has a recycling center, and they don't ask to see proof of where you live when you drop off stuff. Maybe there is a center nearby you can take things to?

I commiserate with you. We have no access to recycling where we are & it is KILLING me every time I put something in the garbage. But the fact of the matter is that as great as reducing & reusing can be there is only so much you can do.

Short of not buying some products at all we can't reduce the packaging any less (& I don't think dh would comply with a no beer rule).

And let's face it for the two of us, we only need so many containers, bottles, cartons, etc. in our cupboard. Just 'cause I can't recycle it doesn't mean I should then hold onto it forever & have it clutter up my house (ok - this is something I'm REALLY struggling doing myself).

We don't have glass recycling and I have cabinets full of spaghetti, jelly, peanut butter jars and no idea what to do with them. I do use them to freeze stuff, but I have sooo many.

What else do you guys do with glass?

with glass jars and stuff we use them to drink out of. it's a country thing but I've been reading about dishes having lead in the finishes if they are not just plain see through glass so it may be a plus for you.

OP: Maybe speak up and get involved. Find out more information about recycling in the greater area. See what you can do to bring recycling to your more immediate area. Even if nothing formal can be found or created, you can always start up a grass-roots effort. Find a few people with pick-up trucks and rotate who will drive the recycling to the closest facility or something. Let that person (each time) keep the cash to cover the costs. You have to weigh out the various factors, of course, but if you start something maybe the "powers that be" will realize there is a need and get something more formal going.

"Be the change you want to see" is a quote I've seen a few times recently and it seems to fit here. (I don't know who to give credit to, but wanted you to know it is not my original saying. )

We throw everything out in the garage and take it to my moms house every so often. SHE has recycling!

I can sympathize though. I wish we had recycling where I'm at.

Well, I found the closest recycling place and took some stuff there. OMG, it was a dump...literally, run by the Klampetts. I was scared a little but they took the items for recycling so I guess I'll be going there every week.
I am currently fighting with the city over the aerial mosquito spraying or else I probably would engage them about recycling. Perhaps after I have resolved the current issue.

I use them to wrap presents in...socks, gloves ect...always fools whoevers getting the gift
