How to make my own wipes?

(sorry as I'm sure this question is asked bunches, but the search is down)

I have yards upon yards of random flannel (I cleaned out my stash this weekend) and wanted to make my own wipes. Can I just use flannel? Do I need to make it more than one layer or add additional types of fabric? How big should they be?

I'm so new to this!

yep, you can use just flannel. i have a bunch that are 2 layers of flannel, turned and topstitched as well as some that are flannel/baby terry combo. i cut mine to a 8 x 8 size before sewing. when folded over, these fit the sposie wipe containers perfectly!!

I think your flannel should work fine. I have a bunch of wipes made from some microfiber cloth my sister gave me. Also, if anyone gives you baby washcloths, those are good too.

Here's a website with some easy recipes for wipe solution. I find it works best for me to keep it in a spray bottle with the wipes separate. I got that idea from my friend whose baby I used to watch.. Her little DD would laugh when I sprayed her buns. My DD just looks surprised. Lol

I have lots of flannel wipes. I prefer two layers. You can make them any size or shape you like. I like squares and I also like ovals.

Wonderful - so just two layers of flannel sewn together then? Sounds easy enough

If I wanted to add something more "grabby" for the messes, can I just go by touch on what feels grabby at the fabric store? Or is there a specific fabric that I should look for?

Personally I like bamboo/cotton fleece or cotton fleece with the bumpy/fuzzy side out. It stays soft but has enough "grabbyness" to get the job done. You can do two layers of that or one of flannel one of fleece or both flannel - what ever you like best!

baby washcloths are the best for the biggest poops! water is all I use. you could cut up those old hooded baby towels for great wipes!

I made a ton of wipes using just one layer of flannel and no sewing. I just cut the flannel up into rectangles, thats it. For several washes, they will leave little strings on the dipes, but big whoop, it's just flannel strings, easily picked off (or not!). I have not had to test them on anything horrific, as dd is only 2 months old, but I rarely need more than one if she poops her dipe.

Yes, e.g. baby terry, but stick to natural fibres. Synthetics tend to smear and IME a bit of absorbency helps.
