Need Help with Cloth Diapers - please help

Hello. I do not have any children. But, my sister is pregnant and she will be using cloth diapers.

So, since I sew, I wanted to make her some cloth diapers.

But (excuse my stupid questions), I have a couple questions. I am hoping someone here can help.

She lives in the city and does not have a washer/dryer. She is planning on using a diaper service - not sure if this make a difference.

1 - So far everything I have found was for really cute fleece type diapers. If I make these, do they still need some kind of cover?

2 - Are this cute fleece diapers really nice covers?

3 - If she uses a service, are they only the white basics or do they return your actual diapers? I was thinking that they take your used one and leave clean ones - like an exchange? I have no idea.

4 - I have found a few sites for patterns, is there one that you guys love the best.

I just really want to make nice things for her - and look like I actually looked into how to do it right. So, any help would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Diaper services supply the diapers, not the user. Your sister will be getting a different batch of diapers every week; the same ones will not be returned to her. (Unless she has a special service...you will have to check with her).

A better bet may be to make a baby carrier for her. There are several free tutes at sleepingbaby, and lots of help at thebabywearer.com.

True. If she wants to use a service she will be getting new used prefolds every week and they typically don't wash handmade diapers for you.

You can still try to make a few for her, though!!! She might like them better and realize that doing diaper laundry isn't so bad afterall when you get the cutest fluff handmade for you!

1 - So far everything I have found was for really cute fleece type diapers. If I make these, do they still need some kind of cover? Some fleece is better for being water resistant than others. The typical blizzard fleece at the fabric store is *ok* but, the less light you can see through it when you hold it up the better.
2 - Are this cute fleece diapers really nice covers? You can make fleece covers as well

4 - I have found a few sites for patterns, is there one that you guys love the best. There are lots of great patterns out there! PM me if you would like to try one of mine for free.

You can also visit http://sewyourown.blogspot.com and click on the articles to learn more about fabrics and what they are good for in diapering and where you can find them best of luck!

I could be wrong- but I think with a service you still have to have your own covers right? There is a mama on here who has kits to make covers- where is she? Is it kaylas kits or something like that? They are great and come with fab instructions.

I suggest you contact local diaper services and see what the policies are. She'll appreciate you doing some leg work for her!

I'm not sure if you mean my site, DiaperKit.com. I have diaper cover kits available individually as well as in bulk. Everything is pre-cut and ready to sew.

I have only known of diaper services that use their own diapers. You can provide your own covers or they will sell them to you - either way I think you wash the covers?? I'm not sure - I've never used a service. I think for sanitation reasons they bleach and/or boil the diapers. I think you wash your own covers so that they are not responsible for them. Not sure though.

www.kaylasclothkits.com The KCK One works as a one size fits all cover over prefolds like you would get in the diaper service
