We were visiting my family out of state recently with our newborn, and I think we created a little 5 year old lactivist in the process.
I was in the guest bedroom side-lying nursing the wee one, and my young niece came in to play. I told her I couldn't get up because the baby was nursing - and she looked at the top of my breast and asked, "What is THAT?!" I told her that's how babies eat. She was still confused (she's only ever seen bottle-fed babes, and was FF herself), so I explained that mamas make milk for babies, and that's how they get the milk.
"From your BOOOOB???!"
She asked why, of course...so I told her this way is better for baby and for me, and that it's nice because I don't have to wash bottles all the time. She's so practical and she loves to clean, and responded, "But you have to wash your boob, right?"
Anyway, she's so curious and we ended up having a nice little conversation about the whole process and why it is so good. She and her mama were visiting some friends with a new baby a few days later, and apparently the new mom got an earful from my niece when she pulled out a bottle and started mixing formula.
I'm told that breastfeeding is her current obsession now, and she's been asking lots of questions. Her parents are trying to give her a sibling, and fortunately her mom wants to breastfeed this time around - hopefully my niece will hold her to it. I'm so proud!
