mega doses of calcium/mag. for labor?

Has anyone heard of this? The woman who buys goat's milk from us was telling me that she and everyone she knows/tells swears by this:

When labor has started, she takes like 20 calcium/mag. pills. Then every half hour or hour, she takes 6-7 more. She says it relaxes the mom and her tissues and really takes the edge off the pain. Completely swears by it. Said she would not do labor without it.

Ever heard of this? She said it cannot hurt you and you pee the excess out.....

anyone?

I'm pretty sure calcium magnisium does the opposite and loosens stools. My midwife actually reccomends it for constipation

mmm interesting, first I have heard of this
Cal/mag will definitely help for constipation, not cause it

I just heard about this & the same thing for after birth pains. I'm going to try some for after birth pains this time. But, not the mega-doses.

yeah, magnesium sulfate is taken to relax the bowels and aid constipation. many cal/mag suppl. are mag citrate, but i'm sure it can contribute. the amount used to calm the uterus is a powerful dose, and even i saw when taken the daily dose it really quieted the baby too. that would concern me.

Ditto for me. It sounds counter productive since it calms down my uterus when it gets irritable.

My midwife said if it's real labor, cal/mag will regulate contractions and keep labor going, but if it's irritable uterus, then it will slow/stop contractions. And she said up to 3000cal/1500mag mg/day for me.

Oh, man....I get more calcium than that popping Tums for heartburn at night. I hope that's o.k., b/c I can't not take them.

Doesn't red rasberry leaf tea have a lot of calcium and magnesium. I was reading in the RRL thread about drinking a lot as soon as you go into labor to help ease the pain.
