Blood Tests

I'm going to call my OBGYN today to see if she'll order some blood tests for me. It's not a sure thing, as I switched to a homebirth midwife and haven't seen her since I was 20 weeks pregnant (and I'm now 3 weeks postpartum). But this is my third baby, and with all three I've had pretty much no milk right from the start. I've never been diagnosed with PCOS, but it's a definite possibility. I'd also like to check hormone levels and everything.

Can someone tell me which specific tests to ask for? I know from prior experience that they won't think to order tests that I don't specifically ask for.. at least when it comes to supply issues.

Thanks!

Rather than trying to look at small parts of this large puzzle, have you considered seeing a lactation consultant to evaluate everything including baby's mouth, breast size and shape, and latch? They would also know the tests to recommend. All I can think of off hand is progesterone and prolactin.

Yes, I've looked at the big picture, including having seen LCs. I've dealt with this three times, gone through the wringer, and only have small pieces of the puzzle left.

My understanding is that prolactin tests are really hard to do well and read well in nursing mothers, b/c the timing in relation to nursing matters, and the person interpreting the results needs to know what is "normal" for nursing mothers.

Just to throw that out there!
