Our baby boy, Chance J.C. arrived last Sunday, June 22nd at 9:52 p.m. He weighed 8 lbs and was 20 1/2 inches long. He looks just like his big brother!
I woke up Sunday morning (40 w 4 d) shortly after 7:00 a.m. after a rough night of sleep. As I laid in bed with DS and said goodbye to DH (warning him that I was feeling a little different and he should have his phone with him) I realized that I was having contractions that were different from the BH contractions. As I laid there a little longer I noticed they were in a pattern of every 10 minutes. Around 8:30 I called my doula to check in with her. She lives over 4 hours away so I wanted to give her a heads-up. She said to continue to monitor things and call her back in an hour. DS woke up and we had breakfast together and then he had a bath. Contractions slowed down during this time. I called my doula back to tell her not much had changed. She said she was going to come anyway (good thing). The day went on pretty uneventfully. My mom came over for lunch and then took DS to her house so I could rest. DH came home from work to be with me. Contractions were spaced out, but had good intensity when they came. My doula arrived around 4:00. She gave me a warm pack for my back and instructed me to breathe deep during the intense contractions. Awhile later my mom and DS came back and we all ate dinner together. After dinner I sat on the exercise ball in the bedroom while DH laid on the bed next to me. He helped me time contractions and held my hand through them. By now they were 4 minutes apart and more intense, but still very manageable. By 8:30, they were coming every 2 minutes or so. We decided to head for the hospital. We arrived at 9:00 p.m. and I was 6 cm dilated. I changed into my birthing clothes and listed to the Beatles and James Taylor for a little bit to relax. The contractions seemed to be coming right on top of each other. At 9:35 the doctor checked me again and I was 8 cm. At 9:50 my water broke. Two minutes and three pushed later Chance was born! He started nursing 18 minutes later and hasn't left our arms since! It was a wonderful labor and delivery and I was so thankful that we were able to avoid medical interventions this time. I was lucky to have such a great DH, doula, and doctor who supported me through everything.
