SPD and labor

I'm wondering if someone who has had bad pubic bone pain before can tell me
how it might affect labor.

I have had moderate pelvic pain since my last trimester started. It has gotten progressively worse.....the last couple of weeks have been horrible.
The last few days it hurts to even walk across the room. It is terribly painful to turn in bed, also.

Does this hurt in labor, too? Or does the real pain of labor pretty much mask it? I already know I won't be squatting, etc. I figure if I can't do it now, I shouldn't in labor. I know side lying or hands and knees might feel the best. Although getting on my hands and knees this morning hurt too, so I'm a little worried about that--it's my favorite birthing position.

I'm just wondering if the pelvic pain worsens with labor.

It may be that baby's head is resting right on the bone. I had that with my sixth baby. It did hurt during labor but not worse than anything else. I would highly recommend getting to a chiropractor if possible. It really helps alot in just a couple of visits. I believe it helped me deliver my seventh child in a lot less pain than the sixth.

My pelvic pain disappeared in labor completely. And didn't really come back afterwards!!

Edited to add: And this pregnancy, this book has saved my life. I cannot reccomend it enough. My chiro. made things worse, and this literally fixed everything. I can actually MOVE. Rolling over in bed is still a little tricky, but other than that I feel normal and not crippled. I noticed a difference in 24 hours, so it's worth picking up even this late in the game.

I am SO happy to hear this. : It was a big concern of mine also.

I wanted to add that I was hoping that even if it didn't go away, that since I was planning on a waterbirth, the water would help me be more comfortable in the squatting position.

I've also heard this in other threads in the I'm Pregnant board, that once labor started the spd pain didn't really matter or factor in. I've been holding on to that since I also have spd and have decided it's not worth worrying over at this point.

I had this REALLY severly with my son! I was like you! I could not walk and ended up shuffling when I had to move somewhere. (I have it this time, but not NEARLY as bad!) Anyway, once I was in labor, it seems to "disapear" and it didn't come back after DS was born, either. Also, you might be surprised! I birthed DS squatting!! It was actually the most comfortable position with the SPD during labor at that point! Really! You'll figure out once you are in active labor which position works best for you!

yes! get this book now! you will be so glad that you did.

this is my 3rd round w/SPD during pg, and it seems to start earlier and get worse w/ each pg, tho w/ the help of the book it's totally livable, and other pg complaints actually bother me more most of the time.

as far as labor goes, the pain does seem to go away, tho I think the SPD can cause at least a little bit of malpositioning of baby, which can cause some different kinds of pain. When I had my last baby, near the end of transition and almost all the way thru pushing I had the *worst* pain in the tops of my thighs. A burning, aching kind of pain. To the point I couldn't stand during a ctrx AND it blocked any other sensation I had in the rest of my body. This was my 5th baby, and I had never had pain like that in labor before and I have to wonder if the SPD had something to do w/it. Maybe, or not, who knows?

like you said, squatting is def. out. and if from some reason you have to lay on your back and have your legs up, make sure one leg is moved, and then the other. and do NOT allow anyone to hold your legs and pull them back. this can cause major problems. if they want to support your legs, great, but no wish-boning! the problem comes from the fact that each person will apply force to your legs differently and this uneven pressure will cause things to get out of alignment, which is the whole problem w/ SPD. you want things to stay aligned and even.

Thank you for asking this question! I have been in severe pain for the past 7 weeks with SPD and I hadn't heard of it before. I've been a bit concerned about the effects of labor and I'm thrilled to hear so many positive stories!

Oh, that's good. Some days it's so annoying b/c the spd is so much worse than any other complaint I have. I wanted to vacuum yesterday (it had been awhile and I knew I wouldn't do it again until after baby).....I actually had to take a Motrin..which I haven't done all pregnancy. It made a tiny bit of difference, but not much.

I think it's too late for the book for me at this point, but I will keep it in mind in case there is a "next time". ; )

Actually, I have started to notice other pg things now as I get closer. I'm having crampy type CX on and off now and the whole emptying thing is on and off....I feel just crappy overall. I haven't noticed the spd as much. Partly b/c I'm resting more out of need and partly b/c I feel other things more. So I'm hoping labor will make the spd not so bad. You know, if your toe hurts, smack your thumb with a hammer type mentality. LOL!

I had fairly severe pain the week before I went into labor and it eased off a bit last week. It completely disappeared during labor. The last two days I've been having some pelvic discomfort and can hear the bones cracking sometimes when I move...but the pain right in the front pubic bone is gone.

Woo hoo! My local library has that book (I just now checked and put it on reserve). I crackle when I move sometimes too. Last night when I got up to pee, my hubby said I sounded like bubble wrap!

I hate the SPD pain. I had it really bad with my first, too, and yeah, once labor started I didn't notice it again and it was gone right after. It's rare that a woman will have issues after birth with it.

One thing that's been helping me is sitting on my birth ball. I figure true squatting is so out of the question for me, but on the birth ball it's ok, and I can get up from that position well, too.

I have been loving my time in the pool! I can do all kinds of stretching that I cannot dream of doing normally right now, and it's the only time I don't hurt. That's helped a lot, too.

Planning a trip to the chiro next week for Webster and for this. I am looking forward to it!
