My husband... He is in the biofuels industry (biodeisel) and because of the crazy grain prices, no one is building new plants. He found a new job, but they don't have work right now either so he might get laid off from it.

Meanwhile, my department is doing layoffs in 2 weeks. yay for us.

Well I lost my job last year and earlier this year after months of looking pretty much decided to go back to being self-employed as a consultant because I literally could not find anything. In 6 months of ft job searching I must have sent out well over a hundred resumes and only got 3-4 interviews. It was really soul crushing as I have a masters and years of experience but had few leads. A friend's husband only just landed a job after almost 2 years of unemployment and this was a man who worked in senior level positions in the banking industry. His new job is nowhere near what he used to earn but its something.

I have been saying since last summer when I lost my job that things were going bad as far as the job market.

I don't know anyone, and when I look in the newspaper, I see lots of jobs available. After the flooding that just occurred here, I can only imagine that jobs will be plentiful in construction, etc. They are talking of razing up to 3500 homes, those people will have to live somewhere eventually. Plus the whole downtown will need to be rebuilt.

I live in a forestry town in northern BC. We've been hit really hard by the housing crash. (nobody's building houses, nobody's buying wood) 2 of the 3 mills in town are shut down since last fall. That's about 3-400 people including many of my friends. I's rough here right now.

My husband works tech for a large bank and it is definitely downsizing (though thankfully not him) and I just found out that a good friend's husband in my hometown is being let go as the whole office is being closed. He is not having much luck finding anything.

My husband is from Michigan: Major job loss there.

I am from southern IL: Major job loss there. Or that part of the state has just been in a slump for over a decade.

We live in Texas: I know no one that has lost a job but according to many corporate recruiters that my husband works with, the market has tightened up and employers are hiring slightly less thus being more picky about whom they hire. Where we live, foreclosure has been a non issue. Home values are still raising each year. 4-5 miles away in lower income neighborhoods, a big issue. I don't think that is really tied to the job market locally moreso to bad lending/borrowing practices.

My brother was a reporter (sports) for a state wide newspaper for 20+ years. About 9 months ago they let go about half of the people in his division including him (I think it was at least 10+ people, and that was just in high school/college sports writing - I don't know how many paper-wide). He just started a new job last month - editing for Dow Jones. (NY tri-state area)

My dh's company has laid off many people in the past few years, some we knew.

My husband.. he has been out of a job since the start of May, but he has a severance package so we're okay until the start of Aug.

I don't know anyone who has lost their job yet, but I know several people that are having a hard time finding employment. Although I will probably never "lose" my job as a adjunct college instructor (it's contracted, paid per class), the college is having a very hard time reaching the minimum number of students for my classes. I know many of my students are putting off school so that they can continue to work, or don't want to worry about paying for school, etc. Luckily, it's "investing/fun money" for us, so we don't depend on it but I feel horrible for the instructors who do.

We're in a military town, so no one here is losing jobs.

I don't know anyone, I haven't even heard of a of a friend of a friend. DH is in IT, he hasn't noticed any decrease in his workload, his clients are all businesses. He does have a couple clients that are struggling, land title companies, the car dealerships have decreased some of their computer equipment ordering, but not by much.

My sister was out of work at the end of last year, and just got a job which will start next week...so it was something like 9 or 10 months laid off. Her field is very difficult to find a job for. Also, her new job is over two hours commute total each day, so she's going to be paying a lot of $$$ for gas money. Had just moved into a new house about 6 months (which she had been building for two years). I doubt she will want to move.

A guy we know (though hadn't talked recently) of ours was laid off from his job (I don't know when) but I found out because I ran into him at walmart when I had to buy some bathroom repair stuff.

I just found out the husband of a girlfriend of mine who is 8 months pregnant and high risk has just been laid off (yesterday). And, for him this really particularly hurts because he is unskilled, but worked in some sort of union plant job where the pay and benefits were excellent.

My FIL worked for a home builder and was laid off last summer. He cant find work in any type of construction now.
My friends DH just got word that they will be closing in 3 months but the company is trying to fit them into other areas. They work for Disney.

I have access to a local mortgage default list. I keep seeing names of people I know on it, including a coworker and neighbors.

I just saw a local business owner at a Chamber of Commerce mixer. He acted like life was great and business was good. When I came home I saw his name on the default list. Looks like he refinanced to start his business, since the loan date coincides with the launch of his venture. He pulled $800,000 out of his house, can't pay it back and is headed for trouble.

Ah, the American dream.
Sigh.

DH lost 2 jobs this year- one in January and one at the beginning of April. The last time it took him almost 2 months to find another job which we're still hurting from. Both were in cabinetry. Both companies went under.

Remarkably, no. My dad sells promotional products though and he is complaining that no one is spending money on those type of things. -He sells mini-bags of coffee with logos/pictures/whatever on it. He is an independent vendor though so there is no one to fire him.

He should start working on his resume now and doing research on a civilian career field. So many military think it will be easy to find a job as a civilian, though being an officer your dh has the magical "management" history. We had to move from Alaska to Texas after we got out for better job prospects.

I know one woman who showed up at her job one morning (retail) and everyone was called into a staff meeting where they were informed that was the last day the store would be open.

I don't know if this counts or not, but DH is a mechanic and he is flat-rate (paid by the job, not the time he's actually there). They are so slow right now . Even though he still has a job, there's very little work, so this pay period, for example, he got 72 hours. For 2.5 weeks. Last year he was averaging 60 hours a week.
