No early dilation

I'm always amazed when I read posts from those who are dilated to 2, 3 or even 5 cm days or longer before baby comes. And I'm more amazed when I read that early labor to 4-5 cm can go unnoticed by the mother over a period of days.

For me to get to 4-5 cm is a MAJOR ordeal. Each time was. I guess I'm one of those that has only BH (although they are almost constant by now) and a handful of painful CX every day until the real thing starts. I am never effaced very much and never dilated at ALL before hard labor starts. Usually once hard CX start, it takes all day of labor to get to 4 or so.

I know everyone is different and each scenario has is pros and cons. Pre-labor that dilates the cervix can make for less work when labor kicks in. Having said that, I realize how awful prelabor can be. At least you can feel like something is going on, though.

For me, you'd think I'd not be bothered at all when I hear I'm not even a fingertip on my due date, I'm so used to it. The last time I heard that, baby came the NEXT day. I told my mom yesterday nothing was happening (except the increased BH and some CX). No effacement. No dilation. No dropping. No plug or even a piece of it, etc. She said, "Well, I guess it'll be a couple of weeks." I'm due in a week, so I doubt it. I'm usually right around my due date, although you'd never guess by any signs right before then.

Just curious how many others are like me. I should stop checking my own cervix and tell my Dr. not to tomorrow....but I'm not strong enough for that. Even if it does mean nothing! LOL!

I never dilated/ had effacement till labor with either of my prev pregnancies. My present midwife doesn't do vag exams unless requested so I have no idea, but seriously doubt much is going on down there.

I also went into labor the day after being told, both times, that I am not dilated, and nothing looks like it is going to happen. I wonder if the act of poking around the cervix is enough to trigger a near labor..

That was my situation with DD. I started cramping the night I had the exam then went into full blown labor the next night.

You ladies are so reassuring! My first was induced and until they gave me the meds I didn't have the slightest bit of ripening going on. This time I'm at least partially effaced. Maybe it won't be the end of time before this little dude arrives.

no need to worry, I am the same way.

i am never anything, not even barely effaced, still very thick etc up until I go to labor. My babies also float till the end, they do not engage to help the cervix to thin and dialate so that could be the issue.

I take FOREVER to get to 4 or 5, but then once I get to 5 or 6, it is fast going and baby is 30 minutes away.

That is how it has been with the first four, so I dont see this one being any different.

well, I can't say that I am like you. I am generally the opposite. But not this time. I am 3 days away from EDD, and even tho my cervix is nice and soft and stretchy, I am maybe a fingertip, and not really effaced at all. It is really upsetting in a way. I really expected things to go like they have the last 5 other times. And I usually have quick labors to boot. I think this time I get to *pay* for all my easy labors and get to have some crazy 24 hr long thing. Oh well, I am trying to stay relaxed and just roll with it, but you know how it is at the end. I want to be done now!

Out 5 so far, I've NEVER dilated or effaced, or softened until the PIT started. Except once, when Kamryn passed, I was dilated to about 3 when we found out. I have never understood WHY in the world I don't dilate with any of them until her, and it was the worst experience we've ever been thru. I'd LOVE to just deliver my baby without intervention at all, and get to keep him. kwim??

This is my 1st, so I don't have previous experience. I wouldn't know how to check my own cervix. I'm not having the midwives check each week, so I don't know if I'm dilated.
