First timers come on in!

I thought it'd be nice to have an area to ask our stupid newbie questions.

I'm Andrea. I'm 27 and DH is 30. He's excited but cautious and worrying about m/c. I'm a research scientist, but will be quitting to be a SAHM at some point. We were ttc since December and spent a brief time with an RE dealing with PCOS. Caught the first egg though!

Does anybody else not feel pregnant? I'm still thinking AF will start any second. I can't even make myself change my siggy. Maybe when symptoms kick in it'll feel real.

My first stupid question: If you're in the fifth week, you'd say that you're four weeks, right? I was looking at a couple calendars and they all say "week 5", so I keep wanting to tell people 5 weeks, but that's not right. I O'd on cd30, so that throws if off more.

Hmm, depends on the wording...you have been pregnant for 4 complete weeks and you are IN your fifth week. I think it's really a technicality anyway. Tell 'em what ever you want

I have been wondering the same thing about the weeks! Today is officially five weeks though.

I am 28, my husband is almost 32. This is my first, DH has an 8 year old daughter that lives with us half the week.

My stupid question is: It's totally normal that my MW doesn't want to see me till week 9 right?

I'm not a first timer but wanted to say that your baby's "gestational age" starts from the first day of your last period (which is approx. 2 weeks before you would have even conceived). This is the standard system of counting the progression of pregnancy. The "actual age" of your baby is from ovulation, and unless you know exactly when you ovulated, you won't know that date for sure.

Everything you will read (that I'm aware of) will follow this standard so always count from the first day of your last period to determine "how far along you are".

Totally normal. I've heard of ones that wait even longer.

I'm Jen, my DH and I are both 28. We're CPA's, but I'm planning to SAH once the baby is born.

I think it's like...when you're 22, you've been alive for 22 years and are now in your 23rd year of life. I am 5w1d and am now in my sixth week of pregnancy (which is silly because of the additional 2 or so weeks that get added on before ovulation for many women). I just say "I'm five weeks" or something.

It took me a while to get up the nerve to change my signature line. =D

Anyway, I ovulated on CD 12, so my EDD and weeks/days are screwy, too. To figure mine out, and knowing that most calculations assume a CD 14 ovulation, I counted days *since* ovulation and then added 2 weeks on to that. I think that's right? At any rate, I'm 22 DPO, but most people (outside of these boards) wouldn't know what that meant.

I don't feel pregnant *at all* and I wish I did. It took us 14 months to conceive and I'm afraid if this all ends, it will take that long or longer to conceive again. Plus, I'm just really ready now!

I don't have my first appointment until mid-July (seven weeks and a few days for me). I can't wait! (And that's funny, as I normally dislike going to the doctors!)

Almost forgot...about me. I'm 28 and I'm a grad student. My husband is 32. We have 4 furbabies and are really excited about the prospect of a furless one, you know...for variety. =P

Yep. I don't see mine until I'm almost 10 weeks.

Ooooh, anyone doing a homebirth??? I'm trying to get up the courage, and convince DH. I've gotten him the birth center level so far.

I don't even have a midwife yet. Going in for blood work with the RE tomorrow though.

Do you get to "quit" anywhere? I'm giving my boss my 6 months notice in a couple weeks (I have to hire and train my replacement). SO excited.

I was extremely surprised my Dr got me in today and I called yesterday. I go in at 10 weeks to hear the heartbeat and more tests. I think she just likes to make sure that you're aware of everyting, take the initial bloodwork and confirm the pg.

Yep, totally normal. Some places won't even see you until closer to 12 weeks, when you can usually hear the heartbeat and your chance of m/c is much lower. There's not much to 'do' at this point other than say "Yep, you're pregnant."

I just interviewed my midwife today and then we booked another apt in a week (I'll be 6.5 weeks) to talk about nutrition during preg. Until then I'm supposed to be keeping a food log. (she does this with everybody I'm not like a special food case.) I think its really neat and can't wait till my apt! I think we have found an awesome midwife!

Feel like blabbing a bit...

DH is finally starting to get excited. He was nervous at first and worrying a lot about miscarriage, but now I've started throwing up and he's talking about it more than I am and spilling the beans to everyone. He keeps telling people about my embarassing throwing up in someone's yard incident.

I talked to a midwife yesterday and we're doing an interview Friday. Isn't that so cool that you can do interviews? Afterwards they have a weekly potluck meeting for new and pregnant mom that I can stay for. This week they're learning about baby wearing. How fun! She did say it was a little early for a first appt. and she didn't need to see me until August (unless I really want to). She does both birth center and hbs, and the decision can be made last minute if I go with her. The first timer transfer rate is so high that I'm almost considering just starting in a hospital. There's a mw/ob practice that I've heard good things about, so we might go tour the two hospitals they work out of.

For all the lurking "been there, done that" mommies - how long until I stop running to the bathroom to check for AF?

Wow! Wow! Wow! and another Wow! You are soooo lucky! Your midwife sounds wonderful!

In Illinois it's very hard to find a midwife that will do a homebirth and there are no ( as in zero) free standing birth centers. The couple of midwives in this area that can do a homebirth legally have all sorts of requirements. It's not easy at all and we have limited choices.

You are so lucky. I wish I had your choices.

I think I was like 4 months along by the time I stopped this! I was very crampy through early pregnancy. Hardly any cramps this time thank goodness!

Hey, I have a question. We had our first doctor's appt this week (I was 4w 4d) and it wasn't what I expected at all. They had me come in to confirm the pregnancy I guess, but they didn't do a blood test; it was just another pee in a cup thing. No hcg numbers, no progesterone numbers. Is that normal? I was expecting a pap, and some quantitative results. They did draw blood for a rubella titer, my blood type, etc. Anyone have any input? My next appt is for 8w 4d.
