Air New Zealand

Just wanted to share how great the airline was when I was flying alone with a 7 month old from NZ to the states.

When I boarded the plane (first, and automatically placed in bulkhead with a bassinet and empty seats on either side of me - none of which I requested) a flight attendant approached me and asked if I was nursing or bottle feeding. I told her I was nursing and she congratulated me and told me she would make sure to bring me extra food and drinks during the long flight to keep me well nourished for baby. Whenever the any of the flight attendants would notice I was nursing they would check on me to see if I needed anything. It was a really positive supportive experience. Thought I'd share.

Wow, that does sound like a wonderful experience!! I wish every place, not just airlines, were like that!

It sounds like the best part of a vacation would be...the flight...that's really weird...

People doting on you for nursing? YIKES! Woohoo!

Yeah it was oddly nice. Especially after my ridiculously bad experience with United. Bad enough that they sent me two $500 vouchers - you know they don't cough those up for nothing.

The man who sat next to me (well, there was an empty seat in between) saw that I had a baby and said "Lucky me." So I was thinking he was quite rude. But whenever I would feed her, if a meal came or anything, he would unfold the tray table in the seat next to me and sit it down, never batted an eye. At the end of the flight he told me I must be a very good mum since she was so well behaved on the flight

It was just so nice to be bfing (It's not a skinfest but I don't use a blanket or cover up when I nurse) and not have anyone act like it was something I should hide.

ETA: On my next flight (I had 4 in a row) the guy next to me, single and 30 something, commented how nice bfing was because it was so soothing for the baby. He didn't act embarassed or bothered at all when I nursed, so nice!

I had a similar experience when we flew on Air New Zealand last year with my 12 month old. We live in Japan and I have found most of the asian based airlines to be very baby and child friendly as well.

That's nice - I guess it is just the US carriers that stink!
