Will it be soon?

I've read the last few posts about pros/cons of VE, what early dilation does/doesn't mean, etc.
But that doesn't mean I don't have my own questions about it!

We are having a homebirth and last week was our home visit with the midwife (at 36 weeks). She asked if my wife wanted her to check her, and she consented. At that time, the baby was -1 station, 1 cm dilated, and 50% effaced. The midwife did say it was a surprising finding (the effacement) for a first pregnancy at 36 weeks.

Later that week Tracy lost her mucous plug in parts and pieces (tinged with old blood). And everything we've read has said all this means labor could start in a day to 2-3 weeks. Tracy has also had real/painful contractions (not BH) off and on for about 2 weeks. A couple nights, they had us up and timing them, but never lasted longer than 2 hours at a stretch.

Jump to yesterday, and we had our next appointment with the midwife. Of course all week we wondered if there had been any progress, what it meant, etc. Tracy wanted to be checked and now the baby is at +1 station, 2 cm dilated, and now 80% effaced. The midwife suggested that the 50-80% effacement in a week was some pretty significant progress. And the baby is really low.

So what do you guys think? Is this significant? Can she really walk around with the baby that low and her cervix thinning that much for much longer? Her due date is the 24th, but I am really having a hard time believing we will make it till then.

Thanks for reading through all this! I know you guys probably get sick of some of these same questions, but this is our first pregnancy and we've waited a long time for it, and we are just crazy excited!

It sounds more than likely that it will be soon, but you just can't know for sure! Exciting though!

If it were me, I would stop the VEs and just trust that the baby will come sometime in the next few weeks.
There is really no way of knowing when it will happen.
She is making progress but it doesn't tell when the baby will be born.

sounds like good news to hear, but too bad it isn't a sure sign that anything is going to happen soon. Also, the contractions that start and stop are also helping her body prepare, more good news even if frustrating that they're not ending up in full labor yet.

It's a big waiting game now that needs lots and lots of patience. Your little one will be here as soon as they are ready. Best of wishes on getting through these last days and weeks of waiting!

The only thing this "progress" means is when she does go into labor, that she will be that far along- and even that cannot determine how long labor will be.

This is one of the many reasons I have opted not to be checked until I am in labor- no matter what your care provider guesses (and they all love to guess), it really doesn't mean anything. These last few weeks are hard enough as it is without the frustration of thinking you are going to go at any minute, and then nothing happening.

A couple of weeks ago my MW said that she felt like my baby is ready (based on feeling my belly) to come out. At my last apt. she guessed that I would go till 42 weeks.

She could go soon - or she could not go soon. I have been between 3-5cm for the last 4-5 weeks and 80% effaced, first baby. I started dilating at 33 weeks and am now 39 weeks. My OB can't figure out why the heck I haven't gone into labor yet, so you can see it can differ. I also know ladies that are 1cm or closed and the next day they go into labor. *shrugs* All I would take from the VE is that she *could possibly* go fast because she is already partly through the dilating and effacing.

Oh, the waiting! At the end each day feels like a week....

Here is my recommendation.... go out on some dates and have some couple time! It will be harder to do after baby comes, plus it will distract you for the time being.

Hope it is soon for you though!

If she is having on and off labor it probably means the baby is not in the best position.

Look at http://www.spinningbabies.com to help you determine position and possibly get baby in a better position for labor.

Megan, actually the baby is in perfect position, and squared up directly over her cervix, in an anterior position.

Thanks for all the replies. We are doing going on dates, relishing our couple time and doing all the prep that comes with becoming a family.

We're in no hurry for the baby to come, but it is interesting to guess about what it all means.
