Doing an external version... (updated #11)

In about 45 minutes, I am off to see the MW for the second time this week. On Monday, she discovered that Baby is breech, and I'm 40 weeks tomorrow, so we're seriously running out of time for him to flip on his own. Judging by my own symptoms (i.e., I was breathing fine as it seemed he had dropped, then as of a few days ago, I couldn't catch my breath again) I think he flipped back to breech last weekend. The thing is, the MW doesn't really want to do a breech homebirth because of where I live. We are pretty rural and if there was an emergency, the volunteers would have to be called before the ambulance could even get rolling to us.

However, I live with my BFF and her DH used to be on the volunteer fire dept, so he thinks with his friends that he can get the EMTs to actually be standing by when I go into labor, which will shave about 8-10 minutes off the emergency response time. The hospital is only about 8 minutes away in an ambulance running code, and though it doesn't have a NICU it has an outstanding emergency L&D staff. I don't foresee even needing it, but the MW wants that option to be there.

So today I have to drive in AGAIN (she's an hour away, and 1/4 tank of gas round trip to the MW. She has called in a senior MW (one with about 30 years of experience in the area) who has a lot of breech experience, to try and do an external version. For the last day and a half, I've been on the slant board as much as possible (ouch) and been trying everything I can think of, yet Baby still hasn't flipped over. I may be able to see a chiropractor too, but MW wasn't sure she could get me in on such short notice (their office adjoins the birth center).

I just hope this works. I am mentally preparing myself for a breech birth, but I'd rather not if it can be helped.

Meantime I have been having some light ctx and a LOT of cervical zingers. So we'll see what happens... I'll keep everyone posted... :

Have you done moxabustion, accupuncture or chiropractic?

Sometimes babies don't change position until you are actually in labor. Sometimes they don't change at all because breech is the best position for them to be delivered in.

I had a c-section for my child because she was frank breech. Its not a choice I'd make again.

Oh that's so hard! I hope the version (if you do it) goes OK. I had one with baby 5 and I didn't like it very much. TG this baby turrned on her own. Hopefully she'll stay there.

Well, I was a little nervous as I'd heard that versions can be uncomfortable if not downright painful. There is seriously very little room left in there (well, it feels that way, but if there's room for him to be flipping over, I guess there's more than what I feel).

I drove an hour into the birth center and learned when I got there that they were going to get me into the chiropractor first, before doing the version, and hopefully the more painful procedure wouldn't be needed. As I was standing next to the water cooler in their family room, I got this monster contraction, and gasped and sat down hard in one of the chairs. Suddenly, I could breathe again, and five minutes later, two senior midwives confirmed that the little one had flipped over again and was now LOA and vertex.

: : :

It was a long, uncomfortable drive, but worth it. Now I am wearing a maternity belt to keep the lower abdomen lifted, sitting forward a lot and took a long, brisk walk this evening. Trying to keep him in this position!

I've had a few more really good, but irregular contractions. As of around 9:30 this evening, though, I cannot sit still and am full of unexpected energy. Doing a bunch of last-minute nesting and hoping this means labor is quickly forthcoming!
