Home birth with a fibroid.

Hi there

I am planning a home birth, which was supposed to be for twins, but now they found it is one baby, and co-incidentally that there is a fibroid present, which is near the cervix and quite close to the placenta. I am going to have a repeat ultrasound in 5 weeks and make sure it has not grown or is not obstructing the cervix. I am a little concerned about the risk of post-partum haemorrhage as it is close to the placenta.

One midwife says she would not do a home-birth the other said she would! I am keeping my options open at this stage but wondered if anyone had any insights?

Thanks!

This might be a better post for the midwives & doulas board. Me personally, just a gal who's had a homebirth, planning her next and is a birth junkie, I'd say heck, yeah, have a homebirth. Midwives are trained to work with all shades of normal. Fibroids are just one of those shades. Of course go with the midwife that feels comfortable assisting you. I always believe a midwife when they say they don't want clients with XYZ. Hemorraging (if this happens to you at all) is a common "complication" and has many remedies at home. I would not at all hold yourself to needing to bleed a lot. You might not as your placenta moves upwards your fibroid may just shrink or move away from your cervix.

Best wishes!

Hi Sparklin

Thanks and I am pretty sure I will go with the home-birth am really more scared of the medical interventions I am liable to get in the hospital than anything else. I do have homeopathic remedies, and herbs as well if need be. I handled my miscarriage at home by myself, and it went fine. Actually have not been to a doctor in 14 years and just use holistic treatment. Not that I recommend self-treatment but I do know what to look for and what I need and have a great homeopath, and lots of healer and herbalist friends too I can call on.

The original midwife is a lot more cautious but I like her better, but I think her comfort zone precludes a lot of home-births for her, the second is very practical, competent and organized and that is fine, I may get a hypno-doula though so I feel I am getting what I need on every level.

Anyhow thanks for the input I wonder if I can move this to the doula/midwife thread, was not sure where to post it.

Destinye, How far along are you? Fibroids tend to shrink rapidly as the progesterone levels go up. If I were in your situation, I would go with the homebirth too. Keep us posted as to how this goes.

Hi there

Thanks for the reply, and I am almost 30 weeks along, at the time of the ultrasound where they discovered the fibroid I was 27 weeks. I really have had no symptoms from this though, and still think I will plan a home birth, and the hospital is always there if need be. I guess the main concern is it is close to the placenta, so there could be some bleeding, I do have homeopathic remedies and herbs for this though, and would probably try them first. The hospital really is a last resort for me! I hope they are shrinking, I keep visualizing them doing so!

In Open Season, there is a story from a woman who had a home VBAC with a fibroid.

Hi there

Thanks for the reply, what is Open Season? I can't seem to get there, so wondered if you have a link. I am pretty well decided on a home-birth, I do not really care for the midwife I have now too well, but she is very competent and my options are a hospital birth which I do not want. So I am going to arm myself with lots of homeopathics and herbs I may need and hope that it all goes well. I know herbs and homeopathics make a huge difference, and am used to treating myself, plus have an excellent homeopath I can call too. Anyhow thanks for the input.

"Open Season: A Survival Guide for Natural Childbirth and VBAC in the 90s" or something like that, by Nancy Wainer Cohen.

It's a book mainly about VBAC, but it does touch on other birth interventions and hospitals in general. It has chapters devoted to VBAC in extreme circumstances and the fibroid was one of them.

It's a great book! I never even had a c/s but it's my favorite book about childbirth. Very supportive of home birth in nearly every circumstance.
