paternity leave - Page 2

Yeah, my DH is getting 5 business days off (paid), and he had to finagle his way into that. That will be total, to attend me in labor AND after the baby is born. He does have 4 weeks vacation time for the year, but he's not allowed to take more than 5 consecutive days off anyway (without lots of advance notice about the exact days, which of course we can't give because we don't know when she'll be born), so he won't be using any of that.

I get 12 weeks off paid, so I really can't complain by US standards, but I'm truly jealous of the Canadians and citizens of other such reasonable, civilized countries.

Interesting to see how things are all over the board.

I can honestly say I have no idea what we're getting. DH was with a company for over 5 years and had 3 weeks vacation coming available in June that we were planning to use. Back up to the end of April, when his dream job came along and a fairly nice pay raise....but all 3 weeks lost for not staying with the previous company until June. It was a loss we were willing to except, but it does suck.

The new company is excellent and very much about taking care of it's people. All we were told was not to worry, that they understand we have a baby coming, and they would take care of it. No problem! Only, I don't know what that means!

I just have to be grateful for the new opportunity and remember that I survived with DH only getting 5 days unpaid with our first (2 of which I was in labor) and about a week, using personal time, with our 2nd. The company even had a fit about all the time he was gone.:

I don't know what my husband will get but I am sure they'll give him a few days paid. I am happy with whatever he can get just because I am from Panama and there, there is no such a thing as parental leave for men.

My husband has to use sick or vacation, and he used up most of his vacation and only has 6 days. so that worked with his two regular days off he can take 10 days off paid. He can be off unpaid via FMLA or he can get benefits via FMLA and california disability but it is only like 55-60 percent of his pay and we could not live off of that since he is the main breadwinner.

I have been on california disability but it is only 55% of what I was making, but I was only working 8 hours a week so it is not a big loss for us. They will pay the same for 12 weeks after the baby, then I will just go back to my 2 days a week. We both work for the same company.

The canadian deal does sound sweet, but it has it's limitations as well. It IS only half your wages (55% anyway) unless you are fortunate to have the company top it up (which I think is rare) and then, come tax time, if you (or hubby) has taken parental and also worked and has a t4 over 35,000 (that would be the equivalent to the US w-5), then you have to pay back 30% of everything over the 35,000 earned. So the gov't is nice to say...okay you can have a year off and be guaranteed your job, but we're gonna make it hard for you financially to do so! LOL
Anyway, my hubby is taken 3 weeks vacation time off when baby comes and hopefully we can manage after that.
