Wood pallets?

Does anyone have any info/opinions on the safety of wood pallets?

I saw a plan for making compost bins using pallets and it appeals to me because pallets are free and plentiful but just wanted to make sure that pallets are not chemically-treated.

Anyone know for sure??

Thanks.

That's a good question! They throw out loads of them at my work.

ETA Do you have a link to the plans?

Oh and this is the one I found the other day.

I found this discussion on the safety of wood pallets (though there is no clear answer to my question).

I don't think they are treated. They are just plain wood, some hard and some soft. Since most are just constructed to be used once, there is no need to preserve them. I work with them all the time and they appear to be good old wood.
I built an entire small barn out of them recently. I am somewhat chemically sensitive and I noticed nothing.
Have you searched on pallet manufacturers? you might be able to contact someone directly and ask.

I could almost guarantee you they are not treated.

I did find a few manufacturers and was thinking I might e-mail and ask.
