Billie and I just spent the last 24 hrs in the hospital

Turns out he is not just fussy. He doesn't have his days/nights mixed up and it isn't dietary sensitivities.

He has GERD (reflux). When I took him in to emerg last night he was so dehydrated that they had to run an IV. They stuck a tube up his nose and drained his stomach. He had an u/s of his little tummy checking for pyloric stenosis (thank god it wasn't that).
Can anyone say most horrible night of my life?
The ped started him on acid blocker drugs this morning and he was a completely different baby. He is sleeping and not vomiting every feed.

I am exhausted.

Oh babe, Im so sorry! At least you've found the problem! I really hope things look better from here on out!

oh dear! to you! I can only imagine how you must feel... I'm glad he is getting better with the medicine though. I just know how super-protective I suddenly feel with my baby and my main purpose in life is to see that nothing harms him. I guess every mom in this DDC feels that way. It must have been so devastating to see your LO unhappy.

oh my goodness...I am so glad they figured it out quickly and that he's already doing better!!!

I'm so glad it was diagnosed early! I have a friend whose dd still wasn't eating much in the way of solid foods at 3 years old. She would only nurse. She was miserable all of the time. Ended up she had reflux, too! As soon as she started taking meds for it, she could eat solid food.

I'm glad you figured out the problem! So sorry you had to have a night like that, but at least now things will be better for your little guy!

Oh wow, Vanessa. My heart goes out to you and Billie. What a horrible night it must have been.

But good for you for getting this figured out so early. I hope the medication works wonders for him.

Please keep us posted when you can. I know I find it almost impossible to get onto MDC wth just a colicky baby on my hands, so no pressure, but I'm thinking about you.

He had a much better night....slept with me all night, getting up twice to nurse.
He still had a horrible time passing gas last night and today. Ped says its a complication of GERD....he cries and pukes and swallows air, which causes too much gas.
I see the ped in his office this afternoon and I am going to ask if there is anything I can do about the gas.

Oh Vanessa! How scary, I'm glad you discovered the problem now though.

Oh man, that's hard!! I've had 3 babies with GERD, there is just nothing like it. It's so hard. The meds gave my youngest horrible headaches, so if he does start to cry again, don't be shy about changing meds...

Big hugs to you. DD had GERD and words can really not describe how miserable it was for everyone. She started on Zantac first and then went to prevacid and was like a different baby. It took us awhile to get diagnosed though and she ended up w/ an oral aversion b/c of it. I really hope you get a break soon. I agree w/ PP though, some of the acid medications can cause headache (usually goes away after a few days though) so be prepared for that. The medicine caused gassiness at the beginning but that also went away. It did change her poops somewhat. We did a lot of infant massage on her belly and that helped.

I am so sorry! dd1 had pneumonia as an infant and we went to emergency--definitely one of the worst experiences I've ever had.
