Pickled herring - how long does it keep?

I don't know if pickled herring really fits under the TF category... it's fish and fermented and certainly culturally traditional... but anyway...

I wanted to make homemade pickled herring, and I wondered how long does it keep in the fridge? Does the pickling process preserve it longer? I know the commercial kind keeps for a long time, but I am not sure what they add to it.

I don't know for sure- I just buy it and it never stays around here longer than a day or two!
But- my brother makes amazing pickled shrimp, packed in lots of brine, and while WE neve keep it longer than a few weeks, he has friends who've kept it in the fridge and eaten it at least six months later.
Good luck finding out from someone who really knows, though!
I'll be interested to see how it comes out and how the process was for you.

Wierdly I was going to post about making roll mops last night but got distracted! In an unopened jar in the fridge they will keep a few months.

I was going to ask if any one had tried lacto fermenting them or if you should always include vinegar at the start. I'm a bit scared to try it out with fish!
