Lace patterns-- I just don't get it!

I'm knitting the Puffed Sleeve Feminine Cardigan from Fitted Knits. It is top down and has lace at the bottom. It was looking so perfect until I got to the lace. I am clearly missing something. I looked up reading charts and is it correct that I read right to left on odd numbers and left to right on even numbers? The numbers just don't seem to add up. The odd number rows seem to be working but the even number rows are leaving me with extra stiches. I'm so frustrated. I spent two hours last night knitting and unknitting. Part of me wants to skip it and just do stockingette. I'm wondering if I'm confused about the rows. Is row two the second row or the second RS row? Any advice?

I don't know that pattern, and I don't have that book, but usually if row 2 was meant to be the second right side row, it would be labelled as row 3, not row 2. You will see lace charts that only show the right side rows (ie 1, 3, 5 etc) because the wrong side rows are always the same--all purl or all knit. But usually that's the way they're labelled.

Are you on Ravelry? If you are, you could look to see if anyone there has had the same problem.

Are you knitting in the round when you're doing the lace section? If so, read all rows right to left.

The chart gives all numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. I guess that means the wrong sides aren't all purl? I had started to think perhaps they were. I'm trying to practice on separate needles. The lace is knitted flat.

Also, I wondered if I'm doing the YO correctly. Pulling the yarn forward and knitting the next stich is 1 YO, right? Or, do you just count pulling the yarn forward as the YO? I wondered if I was counting incorrectly.

A yarn over is the new stitch formed by manuvering the working yarn over/around the needle. The next stitch you're instructed to work is separate from the YO .

Maybe you can find some help on the KAL for this book.

Aha. Maybe that is the problem.

Thanks, I did look there but they didn't seem to have any problems with it so that is why I think it is me, not the chart. They intimidate me! Though, you can see the first picture skipped the lace at the bottom.I'm tempted to do the same!

the YO is your problem A yarn over does not include any stitch work, it's just bring the yarn around (so that you make a loop over the needle, which will make a hole int he fabric and a new titch on the next row) You don't knit the next stitch, just work the next stitch however the chart has it

Thanks ladies! I practiced last night (not on my sweater) and changing the way I was counting the YO made all the difference! It worked!
