Daytime TV Observations... Oxytocin=Perversion

So on the Tyra Banks Show she had some ladies on that were supporters of breastfeeding, specifically extended breastfeeding. While one of the lovely mothers was trying to explain the wonderful feeling you get from breastfeeding the whole crowd made disgusted noises like it was the most perverted thing that had ever heard! So now I'm angry and I'm no longer going to watch the Tyra Banks show especially since she's always saying how she was bottle fed and turned out fine...(Another thread for another time)

Now today on Rachel Ray Dr. Berman was on explaining why women shouldn't be promiscuous; basically if you have good sex it release oxytocin (the same hormone that's released when breastfeeding... she said this) which makes you feel good and attached to the person your having sex with.

How come when you have sex and it releases oxytocin this is interesting and neat but when breastfeeding does it's gross and your a pervert! I guess it all goes back to the double roles that breast play in our culture and how confused we are between what is sexual and what isn't.

I don't post often but I'm pregnant and overly sensitive and angry and my husband doesn't want to hear it.

Ugh.

And let's not forget that it's rude to say that nursing is a bonding experience whereas bottle-feeding is not, even though it's a known chemical/hormonal biological process that makes this the truth.

are you saying that bottle feeding mothers do not bond w/their babies? I'd tell you, vetran breast feeding mommy to 3 that that isn't true in the least. Sure the chemical/hormonal process aids w/bonding but there is more to bonding than breastfeeding.

No, what I said was that nursing is a biologically-driven bonding experience (through oxytocin) and bottle-feeding is not. The hormones are absent.

I never said that nursing is the only way to bond with your child. You have to do it other ways though if you don't breastfeed since you don't have the benefit of the system that nature intended and put there for a good reason.

Incidentally you also get a giant wave of those hormones if you have a normal birth. It's a one-shot deal. I didn't, because I had a c-section. Having a c-section is not a bonding experience. And I don't get all up in arms when people point that out.

I am mystified by the lengths this culture goes to to explain why it is, exactly and scientifically, that women - though not necessarily men - should keep their legs crossed. Yes, oxytocin helps us bond with each other. Strong emotional bonds to other human beings are highly necessary to mental health. You may have moral objections to promiscuous sex on any number of reasonable grounds, but what this doctor has said, essentially, is "liking more than one person is bad, and you should avoid it."

So that's my personal soapbox.

Oxytocin is fantastic stuff. Tyra Banks is a twit, and you should feel free to disregard her opinion.

Yep, it's the difference between "sensual" and "sexual".

Scratching an itch feels good, but it doesn't give me an orgasam! Things can be pleseant and not sexual.....otherwise eating chocolate cake would have to done in private only!

I hate the agrument "and I turned out just fine!" I could say "I was sexually harrassed at work (true) and I turned out just fine (also true, I am now fine)" Does that mean everyone should get sexual harrased and non-consensually touched?????
