What's a good first crochet pattern? I just learned, and made something square. (It's just a "this is the square I learned on") What would you recommend I make? Hook size? Yarn? Help!

Are you into making something for colder weather? A scarf, scarflette, or neck cuff with buttons? All of these are super easy, and I can give you easy to follow instructions.

Crochet pattern central has hundreds of free patterns.

If you aren't opposed to registering for a site, LionBrand has quite a few decent crochet patterns. But, like mama2toomany said, crochet pattern central has tons of patterns to choose from.

I like the BICO sweater for an easy project.

My first project was a baby afghan. Just alternating single crochet & double crochet. Makes a nice thick blanket. Use whatever hook works for the yarn you've chosen. Around the edges afterward I did 2 rows of double crochet.

Oh and the Bubbles baby blanket is super fast to work up and is super cute.. and by the time your done with it, you will be super confident with sc and dc and sk

and it lays flat so its nice even without a border on it.

I actually use this pattern to make washcloths and stuff too becauses its pretty much one row the whole time

well you could always do dishcloth's, drying towels. Nothing could be easier, and you can practice lots of stitches. Next easy thing, a poncho http://members.aol.com/JSchlossma/blpon.html super super easy and can be done in 2-3 days.

This afghan is easily memorized and can be made to any size whatsoever (doesn't have to be baby size). And I use whatever yarn I have handy. In fact it is my usual method for getting rid of scrap yarn.

I've got a page of patterns I've written linked in my signature; I make an effort to make them easily understandable.

I will say this! Don't think you can't do anything. Make a hat to give yourself practice increasing & working in the round (this is my all-time favorite baby hat pattern; I've made easily 50 of these!). Make something like my heart purse for practice with decreasing (there's only a little bit of decreasing), and you can make ANYTHING. The same techniques you'll use to make those to things you can use to make something like these dolls.

Don't be afraid of patterns. We're all here to help suss out anything difficult. By the same token, don't feel dumb if you can't figure out a pattern. IMO, 99% of the crochet patterns out there are purposely written to be difficult. I don't know why.

Check Wal-Mart or your local bookstore for a magazine called Crochet Today. IMO, this is the best magazine out there for beginners. Their patterns tend to be very clearly written, and they've got both the traditional and the modern.

If you're paranoid about your skills, do something for which gauge isn't hugely important, like a triangular shawl.
