I also posted this in tribal areas - so I apologize if you read this twice.
The midwifery bill (nos 2636) is currently on hold with Rep. Pedone who represents Worcester. We need him to remove his hold on this bill and we only have until July 31st to get this bill passed.
Please contact him either by phone (617 722 2090) or e-mail Rep.VincentPedone@hou.state.ma.us and ask him to remove his hold.
You can let him know that you wish to have more choice over how, where and with whom you give birth. Currently Ob/Gyns have a virtual monopoly on maternity services in MA. I think there is only 1 free standing birth center left in Ma. CNMs are licensed here but only under a Doctor. CPMs aren't licensed at all - this makes homebirth a difficult option for most women (often not covered by insurance, lack of hospital back-up if transport is required etc). This forces most women to give birth under the medical model and results in 1 in 3 women giving birth via c-section. Let him know that the rest of the world gives birth using midwives for all low risk deliveries - this results in better outcomes for both mother and baby. As he is your representative please ask him to justify to you why he is holding up this bill. Thanks.
