Our model/actor neighbor asked us to vote on this website for his "hot coffee break" segment...and...I came across this:

http://www.wetv.com/blogs/love-lette...ob-debate.html

Sigh. I'm SOOO tired of this. What makes me most sad is that it really seems to be a women vs. women issue.

Grrrrr. :

Man - Please cover up, I'm a man and I can't help but look.

Woman - Please cover up, my man can't help looking at you.

Ooh nasty big tempting boob! What a dilemma, really some people have too much time on their hands. So many bare breasts plastered over everything these days, is a real one in these people's eyeshot such a big deal? A lot of people think we should cover up, nurse in private etc, some women prefer this but it should not be the default for everyone. If John( in the blog) has such a problem with witnessing a woman, unworried about her breastfeeding breast being 'exposed', he should get his brain into gear and avert his eyes and mind from said boob. If he could just get past seeing womens bodies as a product for male voyeurism he might shed some of the social conditioning we've all been lumbered with. I am finding gender and body fascism is getting worse not better in these 'sexually enlightened' times. We can only expose our breasts when society dictates and someone has to be making money out of it, there are plenty breast images around so it's not like a nip woman is the only group of women 'exposing'. Oh look John, booby! get over it.

OMG it's a nipple!!!!

But being serious, that annoys me. Comparing girls gone wild to breastfeeding mothers??? Excue me! That's just not right.

But if or when I do, I won't be breast-feeding in public--promise. I think nursing is a very sacred PRIVATE activity, like say, having sex or going to the bathroom. None of these should take place in front of an audience.
I haven't had the pleasure of breastfeeding yet, but I imagine that if nursing women esp. those who nurse on cue weren't allowed to nurse in public they'd rarely be able to go anywhere. And what about women who nurse for years??? Am I off the mark on that one?

Oh, I don't know. I really appreciate taking a big dump in front of an audience. Their applause really bouys my self-esteem. Not to mention the standing ovation DP and I get every time we DTD. You haven't lived until everything you do is validated by a throng of people watching your every move. *exaggerated sigh*

Let me make this clear: I am NOT breastfeeding for an audience. I am FEEDING MY CHILD. :

Wow- I actually started reading that and thought, hmmm- this doesn't seem like a bad thing. It's a guy logically thinking through what he saw, and trying to come to terms with his embarrassment for thinking dirty thoughts when he knows that it's perfectly natural....

And then I got to Amy's part. Girls Gone Wild- no different than feeding your child?!? :

Honestly, does it surprise you that a man like THAT is married to a woman like THAT?

It sounds like she's jealous/annoyed with him staring at other women's (even nursing mama's) breasts and this is how she deals with her insecurity -- by blaming other women.

*yawn* It's been done, honey.

Idiots.

I left a response. Two, actually. Couldn't help myself.

At first, my inner "Base Carnal Man" just sounded the alarm: BOOB! BOOB! BOOB! Involuntarily, my eyes zeroed in on that nipple. I stared and stared.
Base Carnal Man? No.

In non-industrialized countries where breastfeeding is common and seen as natural and normal do the men sit around and think "BOOB! Nipples! ZOMG!"? I think living in a society where men are raised to see breasts as something for sexual pleasure has infiltrated his sub-conscious. After all, in this country, seeing boobies = "score!". And breasts are made out to be private and wrong. So, that is yet another sub-conscious motivator to "zero in on that nipple"! Maybe I'm all wrong about that last stuff, but I do think there is something to the way the non-industrialized cultures do stuff. It obviously works quite well too.

I disagree. Society has turned breasts into something private, for entertainment, for sex only, etc. When obviously they have a very different main purpose. Living in this society why wouldn't someone get the impression that they have to hide their breastfeeding in the house? Or in the bedroom. Geez.

And comparing it to going to the bathroom?? Come on. Expelling waste and putting food into a body are 2 completely different things.

If you don't like it don't look. Mind your OWN business. Eh, but that's been said so many times even the nay-sayers have come to expect it. Ah, well.

Wow. Well said. Kinda hits on some of what I was trying to say as well - the part about male-voyeurism.

On a positive note - that is a beautiful picture of a breastfeeding baby on the blog.

Um, no. It's like EATING. Which absolutely should if at all possible take place in a public, communal, social setting.

I'm at the point now I'd just tell them I was actually NIP in hopes that they'd put me on girls gone wild.

Seriously, I'm starting to suck at functional lactivism and I'm not even nursing yet! It's sad, but I've kind of had to stop caring what other people think and just plan to nurse my kid when and where he/she needs to be nursed. That's another part of lactivism, right? Maybe after I'm done nursing or not nursing so much I'll start trying to talk to people about it logically again, but logic seems to escape so many people that right now it's not worth my time.

"I shouldn't have to encounter such temptation while walking down the street, right? Aren't there laws?"

Yes, petition Queen Victoria...maybe she can make some laws for you. Oh vile temptresses.
Oh, wrong millenium. You have got to be kidding me. A breastfeeding mother is a temptation??? Temptation to do what?? Grrrrrrr.

"But in this somewhat-civilized society, we don't walk around topless, do we? It makes lots of people uncomfortable."

Try living in a country where we sunbathe topless on "regular" beaches AND are extremely civilised, thank you very much. I can't believe they equated being civilsed and top{less}.Oh and breastfeeding is normal and you would be a complete pervert and odd person for saying otherwise. Sigh. Also, So it is civilised society that doesn't like breastfeeding? Isn't that just completely up-side-down logic?

"I think nursing is a very sacred PRIVATE activity, like say, having sex or going to the bathroom. None of these should take place in front of an audience."

I have to not read that webpage anymore....no answer for the last quote...

What century is this??? The Puritans died a long time ago, yall. That this mindset still prevails in our country really annoys me. Whats even more annoying is that some of those chicks at WE probably consider themselves to be feminists, yet they spew out anti-female crap like that and want to return women to the dark ages. Ridiculous...

"Even I catch myself staring when a woman whips one out--without warning--in a diner, department store or airport. C'mon ladies--NOT NECESSARY!! "

Okay, so next time my dd needs to nurse while we're out eating dinner, I'll stand up on my table and announce to everyone that I'm going to feed my child now.

And I beg to differ... it is QUITE NECESSARY to feed my child when she needs to be fed.

And the Puritans breastfed! :
And also don't forget that a fairly large percentage of Puritan girls were pregnant when they got married! It wasn't considered shameful, as long as they did marry. So even the Puritans weren't totally "Puritanical" in the modern sense of the word!
