How do you do a dental x-ray for a baby?

My 17 month old dd is very slow to teethe and has a terrible time-- lots of swelling, bruising, and pain for WEEKS before a tooth pops through. We've tried everything, and nothing helps her. Teething also aggravates her reflux. Her ped (whom I love and really trust) consulted with a pediatric dentist yesterday, and they want to take an x-ray to be sure there's nothing structural impeding tooth eruption. My hunch is that she's just a slow teether, but given how miserable she has been, I think it's worth checking. But how is it done?

When my dd had her xrays at 2 years, she sat on my lap, with the apron over both of us, the dentist stayed in the room with an apron on and held the films in a little tong in place in her mouth. Very non-problematic.
