Umbilical cord stump

How long did it take your baby's umbilical cord stump to fall off? I really don't remember with the other 2, but Cadence's fell off at FIVE DAYS! I was shocked and a little worried. But it looked fine after it fell off and continues to look fine now. We didn't do anything to it, just kept it relatively dry. She had 2 sponge baths in the hospital and one at home before it fell off. I must say, it's nice to be able to bathe her in actual water and not have to worry about the stump anymore. It just seemed SO early for it to fall off.

Five days is normal for my kids - happened on day 5 with all of them.

Five days for both of mine also. This time we didn't do anything to it, but cleaned around it once with witch hazel when it oozed a tiny bit. Otherwise we left it alone and it fell off just fine.

With DS I used witch hazel several times a day and also the herbal cord care stuff each time, and it was ickier but still fell off at 5 days.

It really just depends on what you "treat" it w/. Things like golden seal work *with* the natural rotting process, as opposed to rubbing alcohol which prolongs it. I prefer to leave it alone and ours fell off on day 5 too.

Oliver was day 8 and Dylan was day 9.. which was two days after i realized it would fall off a lot sooner if they weren't swaddled all the time.

Both of my babies lost theirs on day 4. I did treat with a little goldenseal on the last day just to dry up the goop around them.

we left dd's alone and it took 3 weeks!

I use something called BFI antiseptic powder on the stump and with one of my kids it took only 2 days for the cord to fall off. The others took slightly longer but not much.

that's funny! wren's fell off at day 5, too. the boys took 10 days each. We've always just left them alone, no swabbing with anything, so when it came off that early I was really surprised.

she had a bit of bleeding from the site on day 6 and 7, but was really quite fine, and she has a cute little "innie"!
