REALLY confused about snaps. Help??

Hi!

I am about to start sewing my own diapers, and need to purchase a snap press. The variety of snaps and dyes has me very confused. Which size is better- 16 or 20? Standard or industrial? I am going to be making Chole Toes diapers, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Hi! I can't give you advice from snap-press ownership experience (yet) but I do know what I have read and I have heard that size 20 is what a lot of people use. That's the size I intend to buy...someday........

tried both kinds of snaps

I think I used size 20 snaps. I got my press and snaps from the Snap Store. I think the die will take the size 18 snaps as well. Those snaps worked well but it seemed that after I washed the diapers the squashed part of the snap would "unsquash" and get rounder and then they wouldn't close properly. (I was pressing properly, they would work until I washed and dried them) Then I tried the industrial snaps from the snap store. I found that those worked much better for me. No "unsquishing" . When I was having the problem and posted my question, no on else seemed to have this problem so maybe it was just me, and my dryer.

Hopefully this helps.

Size 20 is pretty much the "staple" of the cloth diapering world. Sometimes people will get the smaller size for newborn diapers, but I used size 20 on all of my diaper sizes and they are working just fine.

I went with a size 20 industrial. The snap press came in the mail... without any directions. It was pretty easy to figure out and I thought I was doing great until I saw that I put the first snap on backwards.

Soooo......does anyone know how to remove a snap?

There are a lot of ways. that simplest and safest, though time-consuming, involves a nail clipper. just keep clipping at it till it falls off.

another method, not as sure fire, is crsh it more (as in too much) in the press till it breaks.

Yet another involves heating up a pointy metal object and melting out the center of the snap.

my reccomendation is the clippers... messy, but safest.

I use a hand held drill to drill out the center of the snap.

I just bash at it with a hammer until it comes off.
