Well, it's been a long few days but Leo and I are finally home. His stats are:
Born: 446pm, July 9th 2008
Weight: 9lbs 11oz
Length: 20.5 inches
Gestation: 39 weeks
Birth Story:
I was scheduled for induction on the 9th at 9am due to suspected large size of the baby and previous shoulder dystocia with my ds. I was very nervous about inducing but I did not want to go through the fear of shoulder dystocia again. But on Tuesday the 8th, I hoped and prayed all day that my body would do it's own thing and my prayers were answered. My water broke at 620pm that evening. I went to the hospital to get checked and they confirmed it and told me to go home and come back when labour was underway and I was ready. So we went back to the hospital at around 9 the next morning when contractions suddenly increased and got closer together. We had a great nurse and labour went along pretty well with me sitting on the birth ball for most of it. Transition was very intense. I could not get comfortable in any position at all, hands and knees, lying down, sitting down, on birth ball...it just didn't matter. I was really needing to push but had a bit of an anterior lip (I was pushing anyway). The doctor was called and she made it just in time. She had just time to put her gloves on, no gown or anything. Within 6 minutes of pushing he was out. He had been turned slightly so when he was in the right position, he practically flew out. Poor little guy had a lot of bruising on his forehead as a result.
As you may remember, he had a high risk for Down syndrome and it looks like he does have it. The blood test should confirm this week sometime but he has several characteristics, according to the geneticist that came to see us the next day. He was also seen in cardiology and has 3 small defects in his heart, one of which should clear up on it's own, one small hole which may rectify on it's own or not but shouldn't cause him any troubles and a third which is also very small and shouldn't have much effect. He'll be seen for a follow up at 3 months. He developed jaundice so we were in the hospital for a few extra days but got home last night. Nursing has been a challenge and mostly he's getting pumped milk but there are promising signs that we will eventually get completely on the breast. He's such a sweet little prince with a very precious disposition and I love him to bits.

I'm looking forward to reading all the other birth stories I missed while I was in the hospital!
