A question for the WAHMs who make and sell CDs and accessories.

I hope it's okay to ask but I was wondering if you feel you make a good amount running this business from your home. My mother needs to make some money and is wonderfully talented at sewing. She's made all kinds of amazing burp cloths and such at home and I think she'd be good at making CDs and accessories. She's currently helping me build my stash before the next baby.

A friend used to do it and said it wasn't worth the time she put into it for the money she got. So, are there many women who are in it really to make money? Is that possible?

I would love any advice or stories of experience, in general from moms who do this!

Feel free to PM me if you don't want to respond on the forum directly.

Thanks so much!

I see a lot of cloth diaper start ups come and go. My humble somewhat outsider's opinion is that you need to be very savvy, very tenacious, patient, and somehow original to make it today in the CD market. It's pretty well saturated.

I agree. While I don't make or sell CDs, I do buy (and have for a while since DD1 is now 5) and I have seen CD stores come and go. Some of my favorite CDs are no longer being made. I think that a lot of people make them while their kids are young, and once they are out of diapers they stop. In addition, I think even successful "brands" don't make a whole lot of money for their time. If she's got a lot of time, loves to sew, and doesn't need to make a lot of money, it might work, but there may be months it doesn't pay at all. I think that the most important thing is to have something unique about your site or your product. Think about it this way - why would people buy from you and not someone else? You will saturate your local market pretty quickly. In addition, stay in touch with those you sell to and get their thoughts. What did they like an not like? Most people are willing to tell you especially if you can find a way to make it anonymous.

HTH!
