Question re. birth plan

I think it was here where I read in 2006 of a lady that put a clause in her birth plan that if her child was given formula w/out her consent she would consider it a Medication Error. She did it I think to let the nurses know that she was serious.

Does anyone remember? Do any of you use wording like that to get the hosp. staff to pay more attention to the birth plan?

Technically it could be considered a medication error, but I can't imagine putting something so hostile in your birth plan could end with good results. Probably better to put something like "Parent will accompany baby at all times" so you can prevent something like that from happening.

Find out what the current hospital policy is before you put it in. My local hospital is all gung-ho about the Baby Friendly Initiative and they make the mothers sign a consent form before giving ANY formula. So it may be a non-issue.

In the hospital I delivered in it is standard policy that all babies stay in the room with mom and dad at all times. There is no nursery and all the emergency equipment baby would need is in the labor and delivery room. The only time they would leave the room would be if they had to be med-evaced to a larger hospital and even then I was told it is there policy that Dad goes with baby at all times. I know this may not be the norm, but I would ask about your hopital's policies before you do something like that. A lot of things that we were going to put into our birth plan we found out were standard procedure at our hospital, so there was no need to make a fuss about it.
