Last Name Dilemma

Here's the long story short...I'm going to change my last name from my ex-husband's to my grandmother's maiden. I don't have it done yet...I've been on bedrest for the last two months. I will probably have the baby before I get the paperwork even in my hand. But I want to use that name for a last name. I've tried to find out info about it and can't. Does anyone know about this? Can you just give your baby any last name you want?

I always thought you could name your baby whatever you want. I haven't found anything online that suggests the contrary. Good luck - I'm sure it will all go smoothly exactly the way you want it!

You really and truly CAN give your baby ANY last name or first or middle name that you want to. it doesn't have to be in your name at all. Good for you for changing your's back and absolutely give your little one what ever name you want to!!

I agree with the pp's...whatever you write on the birth certificate is, indeed, official.

Are you legally married to the father of the baby? If so, you may have to use the father's last name - depends on the state law. Here in Michigan, a divorce will not be granted if the wife is pregnant. Also, a mother cannot change the children's name without the consent of the father - if they are married when the children are born.

nope, not legally married to the father. I'm also not married to my former husband. I think I'm good! Thanks, ladies!

Yeah, you could give your baby the surname of "Banana-Chips" if you wanted to. Which really would only be a good idea if he/she was hairy like a monkey. In that case, I think "Banana-Chips" would be really fitting.

I love that you're taking your grandmother's maiden name. That's really sweet!
