2 1/2 y.o. hospitalized w/ staph

If any of you are the praying type please pray... DD 2 1/2 developed an abscess in what had been a tiny pustule from diaper rash. She has been in the hospital 4 days and I'm very eager (understatement) to get her out. She was going to come home today but the surgeon said no, she had to stay longer because it still looks bad... I got hysterical at that point. I know 4 days isn't much but I am so emotional and hate having her there...

Who knew a diaper rash could be so dangerous????

I am not in your DDC but I had to respond....I am so sorry for you and your dd.......I had read that children can develop staph from diaper rash...not that common but it can happen. I know it is hard but try to hang in there....your dd is going to be ok....she is on antibiotics right? And they are being careful and responsible by not letting her go too soon. I know it is hard mama

And I am praying for you and her......she IS going to be ok

Ps I am not trying to make light of what you are going through....I had to have my baby in hospital also but for a different reason and I know how terrible and helpless you feel. I am praying for you ok?::

Hugs and prayers for you and your family!

I've read so many articles lately about staph infections (MSRA to be specific). There was one about a boy that also had staph from a diaper rash. Because he had it once his family has to watch him for any new infections (he actually has had it twice now). He is now a carrier and can pick up a re-infection pretty easy.

If your doc doesn't give you a lot of information about how to deal with it in the future find one who can. It is so scary but can be dealt with if you catch it early.

Hugs again.

So sorry!

I hope your baby comes home soon. It is hard having one in the hospital, no matter the reason.

:ditto:
i picked up mrsa from an improperly isolated patient during nursing assistant training, and yeah, it's pretty easy to have a repeat...although thankfully, i haven't had to have a surgical drain in three years now. otoh, it has quit responding to the frontline mrsa antibiotics.....lovely.

definitely find a doc who doesn't poo-poo it (because a lot of them in this country do ). new research has documented really good things with raw honey as a treatment, also liquid silver.
lots of hugs.

She came home yesterday but will have a visiting nurse come in... she is on Cleocin and we're putting silverdine on the wound. We found out yesterday that it's not MRSA (but is staph)... I think everyone was expecting it to be MRSA given how severe and how fast it was/ grew.

Thanks for your prayers!!! We are following up with her ped and the surgeon, I will ask about a referral to an infectous disease specialist. We're also keeping diapers off her except at night... we had been potty training her before I had the baby, but had just kept her in diapers once I was back from the hospital.

I'm so glad she's home. How stressful. You were not overreacting. Four days + is way too long to be away from your LO.
