if you've made wool wraps/covers...a few questions

I'd like to make my own wool covers or wraps and I have a few questions for those who've BTDT.

1. What fabric have you used/do you prefer?
2. What pattern do you use?
3. Do you prefer to serge edges, turn and topstitch, or use fold over elastic?
4. Have you ever used recycled wool, and if so, what?
5. Do you typically use two layers of fabric?
6. How many covers do you typically get from a yard of fabric? (I know it depends on the size, I'd be starting with newborn or small covers.)

I do not know the answer to most of your questions but there are some good links on this site if you look around. They have patterns and all kinds of info about cloth diapering. have fun!!!

1. What fabric have you used/do you prefer?
i use wool sweaters from thrift store

2. What pattern do you use?
i use the katrina soaker pattern which looks like the wee weka pattern. i however love the ecpants pattern, i cant remember the link but they are training pants but i just modify them into covers.

3. Do you prefer to serge edges, turn and topstitch, or use fold over elastic?
its wool cover, so no such thing necessary.

4. Have you ever used recycled wool, and if so, what?
see question 1

5. Do you typically use two layers of fabric?
nope, 1 layer except my fleece covers are 2 layers

6. How many covers do you typically get from a yard of fabric? (I know it depends on the size, I'd be starting with newborn or small covers.)
for an extra large size wool sweater, i hv to felt it and i can make 2 covers from the body and longies from the sleeves but i am making them for a then 16 months old so i assume you can get at least 3 covers and sleeves for longies with newborn/small covers.

I really like to reuse thrift store 100% wool fine knit sweaters (I've found I like ones from the Gap and Old Navy which seem to be plentiful at the thrift store) that I slightly felt so they don't fray when I cut them but still have a bit of stretch. I have also felted some wool flannel.

I use the very baby wrap pattern. We hate pins and like the ease of a wrap.

I like FOE on the wool covers because I only do one layer. (When I do PUL covers with an outer layer, I like to turn with NO top stitch. Top stitching, in my experience leads to wicking, and I don't like the look of it either.)

I can generally get 2 large covers out of a medium or large sweater, felted - one from the front and one from the back. If you are felting (which I suggest since it makes washing easier in the long run), you have to allow for shrinkage which will be different with each fabric. Some of my fabrics have ended up as small as about 50% of the original size. Most are more about 75%. With the pattern I use, I am able to get 3-4 covers per yard after the fabric is felted. ]

I've used the dittodaddy pattern, and I used 2 layers of wool interlock.

I like to make wool shorts or pants for my kids. I use a standard pants/shorts pattern (you can often find them on sale for $0.99 at the local fabric store) and make the hip/bum area one size larger then taper to the correct size for the legs. Works out great.
I use wool interlock for them - one layer works great for these.
Here's a pair of shorts I made for my youngest.
