Starting down the IVF road...

Hi Everyone,

Dh and I are thinking about going down the IVF road. How long does everything take? Will there be tests, waiting for results etc? If we make an initial app't with our fertility clinic for the end of August, when will things really start to 'happen' (as in, when will I be able to hold a baby in my arms if all goes well the first time around)...

Thank you!

There's no way I can give you a definate answer since everyone's journey is different. It depends partly on what testing you have already done, hsg etc. If you haven't had any infertility testing, my clinic said it takes 1 to 2 months to complete that workup since certain tests need to be done on certain cycle days. Once we started ivf full force, my RE said it could be 6 weeks from start to beta. It's actually been 8 weeks and I still have 2.5 weeks left before beta. I saw posted somewhere on the boards how those going thru treatment felt like they were at the end of a sprint and anxious for the finish line, however it's really more like a marathon where you'll need your endurance.

I think Julia' Mom hit it right on the head! It really depends on the person, the couple, how you react to the meds, etc.... We started our process in November (when we had our consult and made the decision to move ahead). Now, Finally, I am in the TWW right now.... so for me, it has already been about 8 months... for others it seems much shorter once that decision is made.

I think if you have already been through injectibles (stims) that would potentially help, as they possibly already know what dose works for you.... that was part of my problem. If NOT, then please hang in there while they learn your body and how it reacts. How I wish that someone had warned me prior to starting that there may be the learning curve... I hyperresponded, and it took until my third round of meds before I even made it to ER and ET.

So, here's to a short, sweet journey on the craziness of IVF. Another warning? Be prepared to be really crazy!!!

For me, it's definitely taken longer than I thought it would. As Julia'sMom said - testing took a couple cycles (initial work-up followed by CD3 bloodwork), then we found out I had uterine polyps so those had to be removed and everything has to be timed with your cycle so that was another month and then a couple months to recover from that (I also had some scar tissue removed at the same time). By then time you get started on the meds, it's around 6 weeks before egg retrieval (depending on what protocol you're given) as long as you don't encounter any detours along the way.

I would suggest hope for the best and plan for detours, that way if all goes as planned, great and if it doesn't, it's not the end of the world. I would also suggest once you start the meds, only have protected sex (as in a condom). I conceived on the pill while doing lupron shots and while it was great while it lasted, the meds I was on were designed to do other things than sustain a pregnancy and we knew within 3 days that my hormone levels weren't rising like they should be. We've lost 2 cycles now waiting for my hcg levels to drop enough to start again.

As Julia's Mom said, it's definitely a marathon. I encourage you to get lots of self-care strategies in place if you don't already have one - for me that's included a therapist, massage therapist, craniosacral therapist, acupuncture, bodytalk, Heart Math, knitting, etc. a couple forums, and a few close friends/family. Think of it as if you're going to climb Mt. Everest and you're not sure what the weather is going to be like - could be a piece of cake, could be difficult. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

My experience was very similar to what everyone posted above. It actually ended up taking us almost a year from our first consult to finishing IVF because we ran into some issues with our insurance and had to wait until the next calendar year - then I was in a car accident and was busy with physical therapy for several months. If we had gone straight through with no outside issues, it would have taken at least 2 or 3 months for all the tests, especially since they wanted to check for endometriosis and I had a laparoscopy. It is very true what Julia'sMom said, that it's a marathon rather than a sprint. Best of luck to you!
