Cheaper phone company?

Argggggggh. I got my phone bill today and it's twice what it was last month. I call to ask why and it seems AT&T decided to start charging some monthly rate now? Or I was on a plan that didn't charge and now I am? It was confusing. All I know is now I pay $4.95 a month I didn't pay before. Which isn't twice last month's bill but really, I was cranky and didn't want to take it out on the poor guy so I didn't go over the other new fees that I don't understand either. Just suddenly there's 3 new fees we didn't have last month. Humph.

I've had so much trouble with AT&T the past few months dealing with our cellphones, I'm ready to just find someone else.

How do I look for a new phone service? And would it be possible to keep the number? This house has had the same phone number since 1948 and I'd sort of like to keep it But not if it's going to cost me a ton.

Sigh. I'm googling and finding nothing. I was so happy the other month when I cut services (call waiting for example) and got the phone bill down to $8 a month. And now, through no fault of my own, it's going up to $16 a month. That totally pisses me off.

And apparently the only options are to just ditch the land line or suck it up.

Those are the only choices I found, too when researching. They have so many fees just to have the land line, which we're not ready to give up.

ATT sucks hard core! Our cable company offers digital phone for the same as our land line. That was the only way I could quit getting billed from ATT. I tried to cancel service over and over and they would never do it. It took a good 30 minutes to get a person on the line and the people answering the phones had accents so think i could not understand them.

Oh, if it's for cell phones- you can roll over your number, not sure about house phones.

Sorry I was confusing! It's the house phone I'm talking about. But at the same time, recently (within the past year) AT&T took over our cell phones too. I'm not sure how that happened.

The cell phone rates haven't risen but the house phone ones have. I'm not really ready to give the house phone up yet either The idea just makes me nervous.
