What's a healthy bed?

Literally--a healthy mattress? DS is turning three soon and about to get his own single bed. What is best? A futon on a wooden frame? Which mattress brands should we avoid? Are there any hazards I have not considered in purchasing a second-hand bed? Finally, seeing as we are on a very tight budget these days, is there any way to find a healthy option without spending a fortune?
Thanks!

I've been reading about mattress protection as we expand our family bed, and what I'm reading about mattress chemical treatment and outgassing is really really depressing.

I found this article: http://www.thegreenguide.com/reports/product.mhtml?id=1 to be a really good summary of the concerns w/ conventional mattresses. It also has ideas for less toxic alternatives, and some options for organic cotton/wool/natural latex mattresses (which are quite expensive, unfortunately). There's also another article at the same site that discusses baby bedding: http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/100/crib.

Since we can't afford to replace any of our mattresses (in fact, they were all purchased by grandparents), we're planning on wrapping them in polyethylene sheeting to at least reduce the outgassing. This site had good instructions on wrapping a mattress: http://www.cure-guide.com/Natural_He...ng___sids.html. It'll also provide moisture protection, which was my main concern when I started reading all this scary stuff! And I can buy enough sheeting to wrap all our mattresses for about $50, which is actually cheaper than many the "waterproof" mattress covers for our king bed alone.

Natural Latex is amazing, and the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept in!

I'm researching this very topic myself as we need to get twin beds for our two kids too. If you're on a tight budget, you might want to try Ikea. I'm unsure of their US mattresses, but their Canadian mattresses are made to European specifications and have fewer / less fire retardent chemicals. See 1/3 down this page for a letter from Ikea about this.

If you live near the border, you could drive over and pick one up, or maybe have a friend buy one and ship to you? They do have some very inexpensive mattresses: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/ca...bedroom/10609/ Only the Sultan line is less toxic, though, so make sure you get one of those.

Me too. It was pricey but totally worth it. I am a frugal gal but to me this was a worthy splurge. We'll see when the twins need big girl beds...
