Those who have had PITOCIN ctx *and* NATURAL- Please compare! - Page 3

I had a pit induction with my first. With dd I had a homebirth and it was soooo easy! I can't believe the difference! I figured I still had hours and hours to go based on how little pain I felt but nope, dd was born quick and I had no idea I was even close to pushing.

Ive only had 2 csections and no contractions and am planning a hba2c next month. But I just wanted to say my mom is ALOT like yours. I am so sick of hearing how my labor and pain is going to eb the same as hers (all 4 of hers were pit induced) and I wont wanna be in water (planning a waterbirth) and I wont want this, that and the other thing. Why cant people just leave us to make our own choices?

I feel now that I HAVE to do this so much more now just to prove everyone else wrong (I know that is the wrong attitude, but they drive me nuts). I wanna have a natural, easy labor and delivery just so I can say "Look at meeeee!!!!!"

Good luck. I heard pit is evil from everyone who has had it!

I had both pit induced and natural. Both of my labours were under 12 hours, but my pit induced one seemed more painful. I also took drugs to dull the pain, though they didn't work. I just can't imagine what my labour would have been like without them My second completely natural birth was as painful, but the build up was slower, I was calmer and the pushing stage was much better( pit induced ended up witha 3.5 hours of pushing, vacuum extraction and many stitches. I was exhausted and angry afterwards) I was happy, I felt strong, I immediately bonded with my baby and I walked back to my room : where I proceeded to scarf down even more food I ate through my whole labour, it was fabulous.
My natural birth was painful, the contrx felt as painful. I just never factored in the drugs until now! So, it probably was much less painful

Regular contractions with pitocin feel like transition contractions of natural labor. Simple as that. It's like being in transition for 12 hours. So... when you're in labor, and you start to get that feeling of "OMG, these feel like pitocin ctx", it probably means you're almost done

: I loved your birthstory so much, I seriously considered UC

I had a pit labor with my 1st due to PIH. It was awful, horrible, will never do it again. I was screaming through every contraction from about 3 cm on, so for hours. Natural labor with #2 and #3. My labor with #2 was much longer, but so much easier. Labor with #3 was just three hours from first real contraction to her being in my arms. It was awesome! I was 41 wks 6 days when I had her, and wouldn't even consider pitocin because of my previous experience.

Awe- and even more alike than you think. My mom had 5 births- so almost the same amount too

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! Why can't people just let us make our own decisions? And more importantly- why can't they be OK with us making our own decisions. My dad actually called me up after I told them a few months ago that I will be giving birth in a birth center...

He called up and said, "Mama said you won't be birthing at a hospital this time! How could you?! What if you DIE?"

You've gotten a ton of responses, but I have a story I love to tell!

My first labor was induced with pitocin. It was the most horrible and excruciating pain I've ever experienced.

My second labor (at home) got to the point where it required all of my concentration, but my contractions didn't actually hurt. It was more like swimming underwater. I had to work it. I had to be aware. I had to stick with my rhythm and not panic. It was very, very intense.

Toward the end, I had a longer than expected break between contractions. My husband and I were alone in the room. I looked up at him, and his eyes were shining. I thought "This is it! I'm doing it! I am having this baby on our terms!" Not to get all Ina May or anything, but it really was an otherworldly moment. I felt a huge upwelling of joy and I started to laugh. Dh laughed, and then there we were, cracking up in a pile on the bedroom floor!

I felt another contraction coming, so I got up on my knees and gave a mighty push and roar. Within minutes I felt pain for the first time; it was when she crowned.

The afterpains were something. Those really hurt. But the contractions of that labor, they were truly pain free.

I've since had a 3rd baby (also without pitocin,) and while his labor wasn't what I'd call pain free, it was nothing at all like my experience with pitocin.

Thank you for sharing- you know, I'm really REALLY encouraged by all these responses.

Since I'm not getting pitocin this time, I would love to expect any less pain than pitocin and it sounds like that's achievable, which I am grateful for.

They were the same for me. DD1 was induced at 36 weeks. After I started having contractions I delivered him 4 hours later (they broke my water)

I had DS2 at 40 weeks, again delivered 4 hours after having contractions, and they had to break my water.

Both labors were extremely intense and painful to me but I'm a big baby when it comes to any kind of discomfort down there (you should see me when I get the flu LOL)

I would take natural contractions over induced ones anyday! I had Pitocin at one point in my labor because I wasn't progressing, and I was literally getting knocked to the floor with each contraction. I had to stop and kneel or grab onto something otherwise I felt like I was going to fall over with the intensity. It was way more than I could handle...I'd been doing okay with the natural contractions beforehand, but the Pitocin sent me over the edge. No wonder I caved in and got the epidural.

I also had it PP too and was miserable. Evil stuff.

For me I had a pit augmentation with my second... I'm thinking because my doc needed to be somewhere... I'm still not happy with her, but she's no longer my doc so I guess it doesn't matter.

Anyway I think that the big difference for me anyway is that when I was laboring on my own I could walk around, used the rocking chair, could get in the shower as I pleased. Then they hook you up to pit and low and behold you're tied to the monitor and the bed. So, I think the big factor for me was mostly the fact I was stuck in ONE place. My nurse was not the most helpful for a "quiet" birther like myself. She was very talkative, well meaning but just not what I wanted to be hearing. I have my labor nurse hand picked this time. Hopefully she can keep shushed and just leave me alone.

One of my sisters has had two babies, one NCB and the next induced with Pitocin.

Her first birth was quite manageable, other than being told by the staff to wait *for half an hour* before being "allowed" to push, because the doctor wasn't there yet (and she waited?!!). :

Her second birth, she asked to be induced when she passed her due date. She said she was terribly uncomfortable and didn't want to wait any longer (her babe ended up being 24 1/2 inches long, which I suppose was spring-loading his kicks and contributing to her discomfort). She claims that the reason her second labor was so awful, was because he was such a big baby (length, and I believe he was nearly 9 pounds). She doesn't think that the pitocin she was getting contributed at all to the pain of that delivery.

But, she doesn't want to have any more kids, because she's scared she'd have an even larger third baby, and the pain of that second labor was more than she wants to go through again.

Personally I think that the pit definitely contributed to her painful second labor. I'd warned her beforehand that every one of my friends who's been induced, has said it was much worse than their natural labors but she didn't believe me. And I think she's choosing to justify what happened as relating to her babe's size, because she doesn't want to admit that I was right.

So there are my thoughts, FWIW. I remember when you first posted here about your first labor, Caitrin - I'm pulling for you, that you have a peaceful and much less painful labor, this second time around!

I hope to tell ya in about 5 months!

I was induced with my first - bullied into Pit. Had read all there is to read and was sad I had agreed to it, but went to the hospital that morning anyways.

I was 100% and 2-3 cms dilated for a week+, and when I got to the hospital I was 100% and 4 cms. - having never felt anything, not even a twinge. Doc started me on what she called a "test dose" of Pit to make sure the baby and I could handle it.

Conractions were immediate, strong, intense and with no breaks in between. 45 minutes later the nurse went and *woke up* my OB (grrrr...) to come check me - since she had asked if I wanted an epidural and I said "No, but if it's going to be hours and hours more like this, I'm going to need something or I'm going to die." Nurse said "That sounds like transition, hang on and let me wake up your doc."

Sure enough, I had gone from 4 cms without feeling a thing to 10 cms in 45 minutes. Yep. A whopping 45 minutes. My body had no time to build up the intensity of contracions, to get used to it before the next, more intense contrax started, etc.

It was a short L&D, just under 2 hours from nothing to baby. But it was hell, and I'll never consent to Pit again, except maybe in the case of a previous poster with a stuck posterior baby, waning contrax., etc., where it actually seems to have made sense and been helpful.

Oh, and also, telling your mom something like "I love you, but I am not going to talk to you about this anymore" is a really great phrase to have on hand for anything you don't want to hear her opinions on.

Won't it be awesome when I can tell my mother after labor and delivery, "What were you talking about? It wasn't that bad"

Not really in a "haha to you" way but in a "SEE?? I can handle it better this time and I DO see a difference between the pitocin and natural"

I had pit with DD1 and it wasn't that bad. Contractions felt like moderate menstrual cramps in my lower back and abdomen (she wasn't OP). I was pit induced at 6.5 cm.

With DD2, natural contractions felt different. Not like cramps, but waves of strong pressure that radiated from my cervix to the top of my uterus. Also not bad at all. Neither were painful experiences. However, I know this is the exception and not the rule when it comes to pit and the like.

I haven't had pit personally, but I just supported a repeat client's second birth. Her first she had pit and was absolutely overwhelmed by the contractions by the second hour of it (maybe 4 cms dilation), and had an epidural shortly thereafter. This birth began spontaneously and the mama could have been at a garden party until about 9.5 cms. She was calm and serene practically the whole time. I could barely tell when she was having contractions. She was absolutely amazed at how much more manageable normal contractions are. She kept waiting for it to get as "bad" as she remembered from her first. It never even got close.

That's really good to know- thank you for sharing. Gosh I'm so hoping this labor will be manageable. Here's hoping
