Leomom I suspect that your smell issues might start with the front end of your process. I think you should let them dry out before you put them in a hamper. My towels go into a mesh bag that hangs near an air vent. If they are really soaky i put them over the divider in the sink or hang them off the handle for the stove or on the back of a chair. I try to never let anything wet sit in a heap. Mildew isn't going to live long in a dry environment. I wash towels on hot with All free and clear and some vinegar have had no smells. I do use non-clorine bleach every now and then to spiff up whites but didn't notice smells in between times.

If you have a place outside to "sun" them, that should do the trick of getting rid of the current stink. Let 'em bake in the sunshine.

For future reference, letting them air dry BEFORE putting them in the hamper will prevent the stink in the first place. A hamper is the perfect breeding grounds for all sorts of ickies when damp.

My kitchen washcloths STINK, too. I wash with homemade detergent, vinegar rinse, hang out in the sun to dry. Then when I go to wet them to use them, peeeuuuu. I use a new one each day, too. I'm going to order some Bac-Out for our towels.

Are you letting them dry completely before tossing them in a pile/hamper? Getting them dry ASAP after use is the key, IME.

Your washing method sounds fine, so I am wondering about the front-end...
