Help with Hyperthyroid?

My mother has been diagnosed with hyperthyroid, an over active
thyroid. Shes lost an incredible amount of weight (she was not over
weight to begin with) so is not very healthy at present. She eats
plenty of good fats and avoids soy products (although I dont think soy
causes overactive thyriod, but under active). What natural things can
she do, or changes to her diet could she make to help with this? Has
anyone sucessfully treated this?

Thanks for any advice

Sita.

There's a pretty huge connection between thyroid disease and gluten intolerance. I was DXed hyperthyroid. I had been told I'd have to have my thyroid ablated, but chose to go on antithyroid meds instead. It was only when I removed gluten from my diet that my thyroid disease completely disappeared. I can now tolerate a little bit of soured spelt without ill effects.

A friend of my husbands also struggled with hyperT for years, and now that he has gone gluten-free his thyroid levels are returning to neutral.

Thanks for that Snowbunny, I will mention that to her. Shes a pretty big bread addict, and basically lives off it, so Im not sure that will be an easy transition, if she will do it at all. Oh well I can only try.

My mom was hypo for years, undiagnosed, she just thought working long hours and such made her tired, and turned hyper in her early 50's. She did RAI and is now on Synthroid, but if she had it to do over again, I think she'd do things very differently. It looks likely that her thyroid problems (both the hypo and the hyper) are related to her amalgam fillings. I have health problems (as do my kids) from my fillings and our symptoms (my mom's and mine, I mean) are very similar (mine just more severe). Cutting out gluten really helped me (and dairy too) so that's another vote for no gluten, albeit for a different reason.

Another approach is discussed on ithyroid.com. It discusses the vitamin/mineral relationships to thyroid health (worked well for me for hypo before I figured out the underlying reason), and has some other ideas on things affecting thyroid health. It has a lot more hyper ideas than most sites, it seems.
