Cord stump torn off?!

I feel so bad about this; I was changing Alia's diaper this morning when I noticed that there were flecks of dried blood in the diaper. I inched up a bit and realized that they were from her cord stump, which is nowhere to be found. I thought it was supposed to dry gradually and fall off on its own, but somehow, she's managed to tear it off, probably because she's such a wiggler.

What do I do?

No worries. She's a week old today, right? Much of the time, the cord stump falls off between 5 and 7 days, anyway. She'll be fine! Just keep an eye on the area to be sure it's not getting infecting, but I wouldn't do anything at all except maybe a once daily swab with a clean Q-tip dipped in water.

I agree, it's probably fine. DD's is still showing a tiny bit of blood once in a while and she's 3 weeks old now. It just has to heal.

This happenef to Claire at 8 days and we were also worried. We called our doc and were told to keep it clean and gently brush aroun\d it with alcohol until it looked like a belly button (ie not gooy ay all). If it got red or inflamed looking take her in immediately. We switched to disposable dipes for about 5 days until it healed b/c it was easier to keep them off the area. I think it was the cloth diapers that rubbed on the stump that made it fall off by accident...

Yup.

In early (gooey, bloodier) days I squirted some breastmilk on it. Way nicer feeling than alcohol and better for healing too!

It's normal for it to bleed. Take a deep breath mama

Dd2's bled and then for about 2 weeks it still had a little blood and seepage. It's normal.

At Billy's one week check up I was taking his diaper off to weigh him and caught his cord with my rings and tore it off. I cried.
Doc said it was fine, just clean the site with warm water. It healed up perfectly.

Jade's came off super quick (before the first week was done) and is just now not having a lot of dried blood on it (and she's 4w tomorrow). So it just takes time. The boys didn't loose their until after a week but they did not have any dried blood after it fell off... so I think they just heal according to their own timing.
