ob/gyn in orange county?

post #1 of 8

I'm looking for a good ob/gyn in orange county, particularly near irvine/newport beach.

I'd like someone who is pro-breastfeeding, open to VBAC's, and not too interventionist.

I can't use a midwife because I have health issues that require prescriptions during pregnancy.

I know you said you couldn't use a midwife, but you could probably find some great info and/or referrals at South Coast Midwifery (in Irvine)...

And, there might be a chance that you could use a midwife - I don't think they'd be totally against using prescriptions during pregnancy if they are really necessary. But, I could be totally wrong.

Good luck!

We used Dr Akerman in Orange for my VBAC in December. He is very pro-VBAC, (even his release form stated that VBAC was safer than RCS). He is also not very interventionist and he is fine if you decline a suggestion.

where does Dr. Akerman deliver?

Sorry, didn't see this until now. He delivers at St Joseph/CHOC, (his office is in the same complex). I know he delivers at a few other hospitals though, you may want to call and check. The office number is (714) 633-0886. I delivered at St. Joseph and was pleasently surprised by how respectful the staff was of my birth plan.

Before I went abroad and then moved upstate, I had a total of one appointment with Dr. Sternberg;

He was GREAT, very natural birth oriented, and very laid back. As well, he seemed skeptical and low-key about interventions and even general western medicine. I believe he only works in Laguna Hills at Saddleback, but I have always liked that hospital (and I HATE hospitals!) and honetsly he just had a great vibe.

I should mention that he and his staff fit me in with less than 48 hours notice and even managed to throw in an ultrasound in that same timeframe, so I had some documentation before I flew overseas. They were great.

Good luck!

I am in a similiar boat. I need to deliver in a hospital, too, but due to an ABO incompatibility. My last birth I used BJ Snell at South Coast Med, but that hospital shut its doors. It was such a good experience, and I would love a midwife again. The only hospital I know of that still has midwife priviledges is Fountain Valley, but I haven't heard great things about those midwives. I would love any feedback.

There are two resources that I am looking into. First, is this website:

I will also be going to the CABO project town hall in Costa Mesa this week. If you can, you should check it out.

I will keep you posted with what I find.
