BF and allergies-help!!

Hi Ladies,

My 4 week old started having green poop w/blood and broke out in a rash at 2weeks. My doc said it was a reaction to something I'm eating, I had been drinking a lot of milk and having ice cream, so we figured it was dairy. So after two weeks of being almost dairy free (I didn't realize deli meat had dairy ) the rash went away the green poop was much less but then a week later it was back. Oh, I also tried soy for a few days- that was a bad idea. She also screams at night arches her back won't let me put her down for a second during the day and is pretty fussy quite often..... I tried block nursing and for a few days the green poop was gone she was still fussy but maybe a little less. But now the green poop is back and I'm not sure what it could be this time, and its driving me crazy feeling like I'm hurting her. My doc wants me to *try* formula and see if that makes her feel better. I feel strongly against doing that, and I was thinking of starting an elimination diet but don't really know how to start and what are the best/safest foods to start with. Any suggestions? Thanks

Kt

First off, DO NOT do formula. Keep on nursing and work with elimination until you get it figured out. Babies with food intollerances/allergies really need to BF as long as possible. You are at the beginning stages of realizing that essentially zero medical professionals have ANY CLUE about these things and you're basically on your own, except for books and other mamas. It is not clear to me from your post if dairy and/or soy are still cut out. If not, that is where I would start. Eliminate those 100% from your diet and don't cheat ever or it means you start over in your count for how long you've been dairy/soy free. It generally takes 6 weeks for dairy to fully leave the body of a BF babe (although it took longer for my DD's symptoms to go away). And it seems as though you've realized that dairy can hide in many sneaky places so you have to read labels of every single thing you eat and start to memorize all the weird dairy ingredients like whey, casein and sodium caseinate (the lunchmeat culprit - although there are some safe lunchmeats). Stick with this elimination for at least 6 weeks before starting to judge whether it's working or not. You may also want to check out the Healing the Gut sticky because in addition to removing foods it will speed the healing process if you add things into your and your LO's routine such as cod liver oil and probiotics. Block nursing is also a good idea if you have a huge milk supply and can't hurt to try that if you feel it helps. Good luck on the journey.

This is a tall order, I know, but I would suggest you read the leaky gut sticky in general health and healing...as much as you can find the time to read this, it will probably provide alot of info to help you with your decisions. It is important to understand how your body may be playing a part in what's going wrong. Glad you are here. Sorry about the reason.

I just read this after posting my own new thread about a milk allergy. Six weeks to leave the bod of a babe.....how long to leave mom's body?

I just wanted to send some hugs.

So are you totally dairy and soy free now, and the green poops are still back? I would take out eggs next if you haven't already done that.

Dealing with Food Allergies in Babies and Children by Janice Joneja is a great book to start with- it has information about how to do an elimination diet as well.

And don't give up, or let your doc talk you into something that you don't want to do. I've been struggling and cutting foods out of my diet for 7+ months, and I *think* I've finally found all of DD's triggers. We are really close to baseline (no reactions) for her. : Every doc we saw wanted me to put her on formula, and I refused. And although it's been a REALLY big struggle for me, I strongly believe that DD will be healthier in the long run by me persevering with my diet restrictions and continuing to BF. Go with your gut!
