Please help me choose a new stove

Hi Everyone,

I have to buy a new stove and I need some recommendations. Unfortunately, I cannot buy a gas stove, so I have to stick with an electric. I absolutely hated cooking on my SIL's ceramic glass cooktop...I don't know if it was the actual cooktop or if it was her pots...

Is there an electric cooktop stove that cooks evenly like a gas stove? Do you have a glass cooktop? What do you like/dislike about it?

Also, since I do not use a microwave, I'm looking into buying a double oven. Do you have a double oven? What do you like/dislike about it?

Like most of you, I cook a LOT. I want something that can cook stock for 24 hours without me worrying, can handle the weight/size of my 18 qt stock pot, can handle my cast iron skillets and my All Clad LTD heavy duty cookware. I also want the double oven for reheating food and for baking squash. (We're grain free and eat squash almost every day.) I also want something that doesn't have the kitchen a 100+ degrees all day long...

Does anyone have the Maytag 30 in. Double Oven Freestanding Range?

Thanks for your recommendations!

I have a friend who's a baker by trade and they LOVE theirs. Maytag doesn't have the best record for service calls though.....

My mom has that one, I use to have the gas version and didn't like it so much, because the actual oven was gas also. Gas ovens are not so good. My mom loves hers, and OMG sometimes I think I'd trade cooking on a gas top for the easy clean up!! I cook at her house and I like it too, I don't have to do to much adjusting in my cooking style at all.

I have a double electric convect oven from Jenn Aire, with a gas cook top. It's wonderful. I cannot begin to explain how much I love this thing . It has proof and dehydrate functions which makes it incredibly versatile, and the top oven doubles as a toaster oven too.

I believe they have something like this in an electric top too

ETA: are you sure you cannot have a gas one? I mean is it because you don't have the hookup or something? Because I didn't either but it's pretty simple and inexpensive if you have gas ANYwhere in your house. Just wonderin!

No experience with that oven, but it looks nice! If you're still looking for suggestions, though, I love my 2 convection ovens. I'll probably never have a non-convection oven again if I can help it...

Hey, thanks for the responses!

425lisamarie, I had a plumber come out and give me an estimate for putting in a gas line to the stove. He said he had to cut the sheet rock, rewire some stuff and move studs in the wall to get the line through...an estimate of 1700.00!!! Maybe he's trying to make a little change off me and I should ask someone else what it would cost? Did you put in a gas line to your stove yourself? Another thing, my husband said we need a dual line for an electric oven and gas stove, which would be even more costly. I'll get another estimate this week.

Convection oven...I'll look into those. I always thought they were like microwave ovens...maybe I'm wrong?

A convection oven is really just an oven with a fan. This distributes the heat more evenly (so you can cook on multiple racks at the same time) and also shortens cooking time. I usually cook at about 10% lower temperature and 20% shorter time. I love love love my convection oven.

I have a KitchenAid gas oven and range and I love it. I don't know about their electric but I could not be happier with this range--and we considered taking the plunge and getting a super fancy stove (both dh and I have been spoiled by working in commercial kitchens) but this choice has been great.

p.s. that sounds high for the gas work. We had gas lines put in directly by the gas company, and I dont' remember it being particularly expensive.

That's the same one I have, it came with the house we just bought. Haven't really used it yet...still unpacking...but I am hoping it will be great!

Well, mine was a few hundred dollars I paid a dear friend cash on the side for the labor. I really don't know exactly what went in to the work, since I already had gas to the house and it's new construction (not sure if that makes a difference). I would get a second opinion maybe or try to look it up yourself what it would take. It can get tough if they have to bend the pipe extensively. We rented an older home (like 1979 built) for a year before buying, and I had the same friend run gas pipe there. It took him almost a day to bend the pipe where it needed to be and have it concealed safely and be aesthetically pleasing.

I guess it comes down to if you will be happy or not with electric. If you don't care then certainly don't go through the hassle and cost! I'm just really kind of strange when it comes to my cook top
